The Coat Of Arms Of The Old Eastern Region by gidgiddy: 5:17pm On Dec 30, 2020 |
Below is a picture of the coat of arms of the old Eastern Region. The individual with a spear depicts the fighting spirit of the people as well as the attire mostly worn by people of the Region. The Leopard is a symbol of power. The Eagle resting on an Elephant tusk is a symbol of vigilance. The rising sun on the shield is a symbol of the Region its self as the sun only rises in the East. The eleven rays on the rising sun indicate the eleven original provinces that initially made up the Eastern. The Eastern Region used to be made up of eleven provinces. However, when the Eastern Region achieved self rule in 1954, the Eastern Regional parliament increased it to 19 provinces plus the Regional capital of Enugu, making 20 provinces in all. They were: 1. Calabar Province 2. Nsukka Province 3. Uyo Province 4. Onitsha Province 5. Aba Province 6. Eket Province 7. Abakiliki Province 8. Owerri Province 9. Umuahia Province 10. Orlu Province 11. Degema Province 12. Portharcourt Province 13. Ogoja Province 14. Awka Province 15. Oji River Province 16. Okigwe Province 17. Opobo Province 18. Yenagoa Province 19 Annang Province 20. Enugu Province(Regional capital) On the 27th of May 1967, General Yakubu Gowon issued decree 14 of 1967 which abolished all 4 Regions in Nigeria, including the Eastern Region, replacing them with 12 states. This was in direct violation of the agreement Gowon had signed with the Military Governor of the Eastern Region, Col Ojukwu, in Aburi, Ghana With the agreement broken, Ojukwu declared the Eastern Region a separate country called the Republic of Biafra. The name "Biafra" was suggested to Ojukwu by the head of Yenagoa Province, Frank Opigo. After the declaration of Biafra, Ojukwu changed the Eastern coat of arms to the Biafran coat of arms by removing the man with the spear and replacing him with an identical supporting Leopard. 10 Likes 1 Share

The government created what they call South south just to separate people of the Eastern Region even more. It is called the Eastern Region or East. Nothing like South South. Those south south states is one with the 5 eastern state. OPEN YOUR EYES. Long live people of the eastern region. Imagine what they could have achieved by now, if they were still one as the eastern region. They keep creating states in the East to separate them even more. Akwaibom, Rivers, Delta etc... 10 Likes |

ijawcitizen: You were ‘unshackled’ from your nightmare the Igbos since 1967! The fact you haven’t achieved much since then....esp’ when compared with your contemporaries that equally have oyel and gas like UAE and Kuwait, says you are the problem and not the Igbo! And there are Igbos in your Niger-Delta, so you’d do well to speak for your ethnicity only! 12 Likes |

So make we fry beans because you uploaded an old coat of arm long gone and buried. Today we have different coats for various states according to the 36 states. That's what we should be talking and not moving backwards. Forward ever, Backward never.. 2021 na for future and development in states and not some sort of 1963 coat of arms. If you like it, keep it in your room and be watching it 3 Likes |

PROUDIGBO: You nailed it. They have been free from Igbos suffocating grip since 1967 ,yet none of their cities could match Dubai yet. We are surrounded by empty skulls in this nation. Just close your eyes and imagine a Nigeria without the workaholic Igbos' pushing and driving commerce. Creating opportunities out of nothing. 1 Like |

gidgiddy: @ OP, WOW! this is very informative! I must commend the person that designed the coat of arms of the old Eastern Region because he/she did a good job. Eventhough, they removed the picture of the man with the spear, I think it showcased the aggressive and consistent spirit in a Biafrian. 1 Like 1 Share |

Very NONSENSICAL region..... AkwaIbom and others now proudly make up South South region **modified** A very thievery and Tribalistic region, that us why COR ( Cross River, Ogoja and Rivers) provinces demanded their own States. Southern Cameroon, a people with same ancestry with AkwaIbom/ Cross River people joined French Cameroon because of the regional tribalistic Eastern government. |
