It’s been a really strange year in football – but Robert Lewandowski and Cristiano Ronaldo are among the forwards who’ve clearly not let it affect their form in front of goal.


Forty-three players this calendar year have reached a dozen goals, despite the stop-start nature of events.


We’ve taken a look at the top 10 goalscorers in Europe’s big five leagues since January.


10. Lionel Messi

While Barcelona have had a really difficult 2020, Messi has still ended the year with 19 goals in La Liga, and a sh*tload of broken records.


He also scored his 644th goal for the Spanish side in December and became the player with the most goals for a single club, overtaking Pele’s long-standing record.



9. Francesco Caputo

A player we’re not going to pretend we know a great deal about, Caputo has bagged 19 goals in 30 Serie A appearances for Sassuolo in 2020.


The 33-year-old has spent most of his career playing in Serie B before helping Empoli win promotion to the top-flight during the 2017–18 season.


He has taken to Serie A like a duck to water and averages a league goal every 125 minutes in 2020.


8. Kylian Mbappe

Lined up to be the world’s best footballer once Lionel Messi retires, Mbappe has been racking up the goals in Ligue 1 in 2020.


The 21-year-old has scored 19 goals in 21 league games during the past 12 months and recently scored his 100th goal for PSG.


No wonder Liverpool and Real Madrid want to sign him in 2021.



7. Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Despite turning 39 in 2020, Ibrahimovic is showing no signs of slowing down and has been at the forefront of AC Milan’s tentative revival.


The Sweden international scored 10 Serie A goals in the second half of last season and has added another 10 in 2020-21.



6. Romelu Lukaku

The Belgium international has proven his social media critics wrong in Italy, equalling Ronaldo’s 1997-98 record of 34 goals in a season in his debut campaign at Inter.


Eleven of those came in Serie A matches in the second half of the campaign, and Lukaku has already notched another 11 league goals this term.


5. Mohamed Salah

Still Liverpool’s main source of goals, Salah has recorded 23 goals during this calendar year as Liverpool finally ended their long wait for the Premier League title.


Highlights have included a hat-trick in a rollercoaster win over Leeds United and the last-minute clincher against Manchester United in January that confirmed the belief that Liverpool might not let this one slip.


4. Erling Haaland

Haaland’s 23 Bundesliga goals for Borussia Dortmund in 2020 have been scored at a quite frightening rate of one every 74 minutes.


This included four goals in the second-half against Hertha Berlin in November and was angered when substituted by his manager. This attitude will take him far.



3. Ciro Immobile

Serie A’s leading goalscorer last season with 36, Immobile has scored 28 times at a rate of one every 100 minutes in 2020, although it was not enough to stop Lazio falling away in the title race.


Happily, Immobile has the opportunity to play Champions League football this season and will come up against reigning champions Bayern Munich in the last 16.


2. Robert Lewandowski

Thirty-two goals in 26 Bundesliga appearances for Bayern Munich, who, surprise surprise, claimed the title to add to their Champions League crown in 2020.


That averaged out at a goal every 70 minutes, the highlight of which was his four against Hertha Berlin in September 2020 – including a last-minute match-winning penalty.


1. Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo’s form over the first half of last season came somewhat under scrutiny, with a solid yet unspectacular return of 10 goals.

Since the turn of the year, he’s clicked into gear, bagging 33 times for Juventus in Serie A at a rate of a goal every 76 minutes.
