Invest in Nigerian clubs?? That one no be investment, na CSR and philanthropy.

Hope is already lost for Nigerian league, where top European leagues have took over Nigerians hearts. To restructure the league they will need to start from the administrators, the facilities and most importantly modern live telecast equipment.

Iconic venues.

Onikan Stadium - Stationery Stores.

Rangers Stadium - Rangers International.

Adamasingba Stadium - IICC Shooting Stars (Shooting Stars Sports Club/3SC).

Asero Stadium - Abiola Babes.

Gboko Township Stadium - BCC Lions of Gboko.

Ogbe Stadium - Bendel Insurance.

Ranchers Bees Stadium - Ranchers Bees.

UJ Esuene Stadium - Calabar Rovers

Jos Township Stadium - Mighty Jets of Jos.

Gboko Township Stadium and Onikan Stadium were fortresses. It was extremely difficult (but not impossible) for Stationery Stores to lose at the Onikan Waterfront. It was totally impossible for BCC Lions to lose at Gboko. This was partly because both the referees and the players were afraid of the fans. So the players had to play as if their lives depended on it and referees sometimes awarded last minute penalties to Stores when they were losing at Onikan.

Gboko was much worse than Onikan. The NFA often had to ban the stadium and banish BCC to Makurdi. The playing surface wasn't ideal and this gave an extra advantage to BCC, because they were used to it. The Gboko fans were also totally insane.

I remember when my sister exclaimed, "Why don't we play our matches at Gboko"? Super Eagles matches were usually played at the National Stadium in Lagos. Visiting teams were usually treated very well. They were lodged at the Eko Hotel or Sheraton Hotel and were provided virtually everything they needed by the NFA. Lagos fans were more likely to attack Super Eagles players, rather than attacking members of the visiting team. The National Stadium pitch was also pretty good in the '80s and early '90s.

But the Super Eagles usually had a terrible time when they played away. North African teams would host matches in the coldest part of their country, have supporters make noise outside the Eagles' hotel and generally treat the team badly.

Then there was that terrible place called Point Noire. Congo stopped playing its home matches in their capital Brazzaville and instead moved them to Point Noire. Point Noire was a terrible place. The pitch was like an agricultural farm and the fans were wild. This was where Nigeria played against Congo in 1991.

Coach Westerhof said that he told the Eagles players to forget about Europe and the National Stadium in Lagos and remember when they used to play at Onikan Stadium and Gboko Township Stadium in the Nigerian League. He told them to play the same way that they used to play in those stadia. Nigeria won 1-0 (Yekini goal).

The fans went crazy. They attacked the Eagles' bus as it left the stadium. Congolese policemen had to fire teargas canisters in order to disperse the crowd. Some Eagles' players were injured.

After seeing footage of the violence (on NTA News), my sister exclaimed, "Why don't we play our matches in Gboko"?
