Should People Be Jailed For Indisriminate Dumping Of Waste? by willywasco(m): 10:35am On Jan 02, 2021

Recently, 10 persons were sentenced to two-month imprisonment in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State capital for indiscriminate dumping of refuse. Is this the best way of tackling environmental mess? Should state governments employ this way of dealing with residents who pollute the environment?
In finding answers to these, NatureNews went to the streets in Abuja to guage people’s views.

Uchenna Innocent, a businessman in karmu market Abuja: Living in a dirty environment is dangerous to health. There are many ways to caution and discipline people, not jailing them. Jailing them will not solve any problem. The government should make available waste bins on all streets and roads including market places as an easy way to dispose trash.

Lovet Udofia: Jjailing people for dumping refuse won’t solve the problem. State and federal governments should provide general bins with strictly rules.

Ajayi Ayomide a resident at Jabi Abuja: There should be officially designated areas with properly integrated waste management systems, which should be
used for dumping refuse, rather than keeping someone away from their family for two months. Such won’t solve any problem.

The tree interviewees from Abuja are right. How can the govt adapt jailing as a punishment for dumping waste by the road side, when they, the (govt) didn't provide road side waste beings for the masses? I mean, the jailing as a punishment is outright nonsense. Little wonder the country is called zootopia.

I remember those days in Lagos, KAI is always there watching people and waiting for defaulters. Nigerians will always dump refuse indiscriminately until laws are made and an agency created to enforce this law.

Jailing people for environmental, traffic and other minor civil offences should be prohibited. Offenders should do community services or pay fines. We are congesting prisons unnecessary.

The best punishment is community service of some hours and fine to generate revenue than jaling them.

As an environmentalist, refuse management is a big problem in Africa and innovative ways of collecting these refuse from homes and recycling them should be encouraged.

Sadly, my own state is the worst of it the whole country. ASEPA is doing a very poor job both in the capital city and Aba

I prefe fines and Commuity service. If they dont pay their fines they'll end up in jail anyway. Other than that local governments should live up to their responsibility of handling waste collection.
