I noticed it among Igbo female Catholics. They often use the grace of sacrament of confirmation to change their names. A close friend of mine used the period to change her name from Dorathy to Jennifer. So many of them.

I have always loved her for the uniqueness of the names of all her characters. She really makes a strong for native names.from kambili to ifemelunamma,she has a way of making Igbo names retain it's rich meaning while sound beautiful and unique.

You have comprehension problem. Is "made up" have the same meaning as "invent"? According to the story, she made up an Igbo name "Chimamanda" that incorporate her christined first name "Amanda". It seem many Igbo parents prefer giving their children foreign names. One of my spouse's igbo cousin named their son Clinton. They visit North America on holiday pretty often and usually feel so strange to me calling the boy Clinton because each time I do, I see the face of "Bill Clinton" in my "head". The boy has end up in a North American College and though that name will allow him integrate as employers wouldn’t guess he is black or Nigerian, but this says a lot. I also run into a young yoruba kid that says his name is "Cam" which I guess is Kamoru because his mother's name is one "conc" name among the Yorubas like Salamat or something, which are not really yoruba names but Islamic names. We get problem in Africa, more so Nigeria. A huge inferiority complex issue.

Read and understand. She never said she created the name. She said her name was already Amanda, and because she wanted to be unique, she chose an Igbo name that already had Amanda in it, so she wouldn't have to change all her documents bearing Amanda.

It happened to me. I feel more relaxed with my present name than the name I was called at birth
