Driving through most Eastern villages, you just have to marvel at the palatial mansions you see left and right. It's almost like a competition among the igbos to build jawbreaking mansions than your peers but that's not the case. Most people think the Igbos Build Mansions in the village just to show off , oppress their peers and impress the ladies but that's not true. Another misconception is that the houses are usually empty and nobody lives in them until Christmas when they return from Lagos, Asia, Europe or America.

Well the reason Igbos Build such edifices is because they are wary of making the same mistakes made by their fathers. During and after the civil war in 1970, Nigerians and her government destroyed alot of properties belonging to the Biafrans. Even in the east, many of them were left with nothing and they had to start from scratch. That's why since then , alot of them have been preparing for the rainy days incase there might be another war.

It's not about showing off or letting the whole community know "you have arrived", they are just making amendments to the mistake made in the past. Asides that, they are also trying to motivate you by passing a message. The message is "I went, I saw and I conquered".

It has nothing to do with civil war, it's all about Igbo philosophy of Aku Ruo Ulo.

Any Igboman with a house in Lagos or outside the East has a better house at home.

If not the community will laugh at him "Onweghi ulo ebe nna ya".

I was going to say this. Who still talks about blood money in the East today? Even Nollywood sef don dey drop that concept. This people are living in a 1990s/early 2000s Nollywood alternate universe.
