Indeed. When a judge outrightly threw out the spurious charge of treason against AkpanUdoedehe , the guy was immediately re-arrested , after being set free , only to be charged with an offence from the past no one cared about previously !!! Those of us who have always held that GEJ is "more of the same" are being proven correct everyday. Behind that meek facade is a coldly calculating opportunist and desperate politician. It is sad that many Nigerians still fail to see what is crystal clear. GEJ has been abusing his powers from day one. We can all remember how Ogbulafor was forced to step down when the former PDP Chairman tried to state that zoning is a legitimate PDP provision. Let see where all this will get GEJ. It is not good for a President to have to bully so many folks into line because of an unpopular ambition. That consideration does not bode well for the progress of Nigeria. It would be nice , at this critical stage , for Nigeria to gain a President most politicians naturally respect and want to work with rather than one who has to either bully or bribe folks into submission.

"Only last Friday, the Akwa Ibom House of Assembly approved a new law, proposed by Governor Akpabio that grants the governor authority to “legally” lock up anyone he wishes for 14 days. The governor had wanted to enjoy such lock-up muscle for at least 30 days."

This is abuse of power and office by Akpabio who is bent on doing everything within his reach to suppress the opposition in Akwa ibom. This is pdp strategy of winning elections because they do not believe in fair play but do or die affair.lets just hope the good people of Akwa ibom can choose rightly and vote a better candidate rather than an oppressor .

Please tell me how the treatment of Akpanudoedehe , so far, or the arrest of ACN offenders alone can be deemed fair by any sane person. It is clear as well that the flagrant abuse of power we are witnessing is happening with GEJ's tacit support. God help Nigeria if this man get's 4 years. Jonathan is , by far , the worst option possible.

ACN Guber Candidate, Akpanudoedehe Flown Out Of Abuja On ‘Orders From Above’

The gubernatorial candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Akwa Ibom State, Senator John Akpanudoedehe, was flown from Abuja to Uyo today in a police helicopter after his attorneys completed his bail application before an Abuja Federal High Court judge, Adamu Bello.

Mr.  Akpanudoedehe is being held at the Ikot Akpan Abia police station in very unsanitary conditions.

His wife and his lawyer, Niyi Akintola (SAN), were stunned by the action of the police which is playing out like a scene from the Wild, Wild West as the police authorities seem motivated by something other than the rule of law or the protection of human rights.

Observers point out SaharaReporters that it is extremely unusual for the police to use a helicopter to fly a crime suspect.  Family sources have also told SaharaReporters that the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Hafiz Ringim, told them during the weekend that Mr. Akpanudoedehe's predicament was "beyond his power", claiming that he was acting on “orders from above” to keep the opposition candidate out of circulation.  That would confirm the interest of the ruling People’s Democratic Party to prevent Mr. Akpanudoedehe from contesting the governorship election in Akwa Ibom State.

The IGP, as Saharareporters has previously revealed, has allegedly received a handsome bribe of N500 million from Akwa Ibom governor, Mr. Godswill Akpabio, to rope Akpanudoedehe into a complex and protracted criminal trial.  The police wanted to try him for treason in a case that involves the clash of supporters of two political parties.  The only supporters arrested, 41 persons, are all from Mr. Akpanudoedehe’s ACN.  None of the PDP supporters who were involved in the chaos has even been questioned.

The treason charge against Mr. Akpanudoedhe collapsed last week in Abuja as the judge said he could see no evidence before the court to sustain a trial. The judge therefore granted Akpanudoedehe bail, but right there and then in the court room as the suspect perfected his bail papers, over 50 special mobile police officers stormed the courtroom, assaulted him and caused the process to stop.  Their attempt to spirit him off to Uyo for trial was frustrated because the police helicopter to be used for the purpose had developed mechanical problems. They then placed Mr. Akpanudoedehe in prison custody to enable him conclude his bail formalities today.

In the meantime, in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State government has charged 41 persons with murder and arson. Rumors are rife that three of those detained have died of food poisoning.  SaharaReporters sources said the same fate awaited the ACN gubernatorial candidate as soon as his helicopter touched the ground in Uyo.  They expect one of the judges already put in place for the purpose to remand him in prison custody for a long period time so as to prevent him from further campaigning in the state for the April 23 governorship elections.

Only last Friday, the Akwa Ibom House of Assembly approved a new law, proposed by Governor Akpabio that grants the governor authority to “legally” lock up anyone he wishes for 14 days.  The governor had wanted to enjoy such lock-up muscle for at least 30 days.

He was charged in a magistrate court in the state capital, tuesday. The court will today, wednesday 6th april, decide on whether to free the former minister of state following submissions by a group of lawyers and SAN from Abuja including Barr. Akintola. Also, his lawyer Mr Andem Ndem, claimed thr was no justification for charging his client to court for an offence that was commited on 22nd over a new law that was passed on 31st of march. The new law would allow the governor to arrest and detain ANYBODY HE WISHES for 30 days.

Reign of terror: Akpabio And IG Ringim Disobey Federal Court Order To Release Akpanudoedehe

The duo of Akwa Ibom State governor Godswill Akpabio and the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Hafiz Ringim, today brazenly disobeyed a Federal High Court order order releasing from prison custody the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) candidate, Akpanudoedehe.

Niyi Akintola (SAN) told Saharareporters today that his team served the release order on the IGP, the Comptroller of Prisons in Akwa Ibom as well as the Chief Magistrate who had ordered Akpanudoedehe's imprisonment, but that the federal officials have ignored it. Another legal team has also filed contempt proceedings against the IGP but Justice Bello Adamu's court did not sit today due to a bereavement in his family.

Governor Godswill Akpabio is waxing stronger in defiance of the courts of the land because he enjoys the support of Goodluck Jonathan, the president of Nigeria who has remained silent in the face of the persecution of a major opposition candidate by one of his dependable campaign allies.

"Who would have thought that tyranny would return to our national lexicon so quickly?" a political analyst said today. "How in the world can Jonathan preside over this and yet claim be believes in the rule of law?"
