This is why I shudder at the thought of Nigeria dividing - nothing will change. Imagine one of Nigeria's richest states (Akwa Ibom included) hasn't and cannot for whatever reason pay teachers for five years.

Bunch of Olodo politicians!

The question is do the affected schools fall under the purview of the state govt or should they be paid from the IGR of the tertiary institutions they're attached to? Where does the school fees paid by the students and pupils go? Is the state education board in charge of those schools? There need to be clear answers to these questions. I need to know so I can direct the thunder to the appropriate quarters with pinpoint accuracy.

The tertiary institutions are solely responsible for the schools including the fees generated .....

After all the teachers are lazy, they don't come to class, they overuse corpers posted to their schools, wine knows this.

Why waste money on lazy rivers teachers? He should import hardworking teachers from nearby sokoto.

The state government does not get the revenue from the school fees of these schools so why should they be the one to pay the salaries? The tertiary institutions that established the schools should be the one to pay the salaries.

And how does someone owe you 5 years salary? Who goes to work for straight 5 years without getting paid?

They refused the new terms of contract offered I guess and are technically on strike or sacked. The legal issue surrounding this is what I think the government should look into. The tertiary institutions employed them as their employees and then seconded to these schools as teachers. The new policy should have only been with the new teachers employed post 2015 when the policy started. They should have been redeployed back the their territory institutions since these schools are already operating with new teachers anyways.

Not just in Rivers State.Teachers are badly treated in Nigeria.Really don't know why..Go to country like Canada..you will be marvel on how teachers are taken care of.As a teacher in Canada within 6 months to a year, your green card is sure.Damn everything is going backward in Nigeria..too bad!.

That is because Canada
1.earns higher income due to being an industrial country

2.Pays higher level of taxes than Nigeria

3. Has higher education budget.Nigeria spent 3 billion dollars on education in 2019. Canada spent 65 billion dollars on primary school education alone same year

I agree with you to some extent but my point is that we can do more on education and your reasons can't be why we don't pay teachers here.

Agreed, but it means higher taxes and also changing our economy from relying just on oil to industries

Because the income of many states and even Nigeria is low. Our budget for this year hovers around 35 billion usd. Before looting and etcs

He gave your five years unpaid salaries 100 billion naira to sokoto caliphate for his
selfish VP registration.
If children of those unpaid workers protest, he would send fulani soldiers to massacring them.

I guess they are in court for redress, the government changed its policy as regards payement of salaries of schools owned by its tertiary institutions from 2015. The institution were mandated to pay the salaries of schools they set since they are the once who take 100percent of fees payed by the students, ever since the instructions have been responsible for the payment of salaries.
These teachers are the ones that objected to that arrangement which they all have legal basis to, a case is in court on that regard.
As at 2015 when the policy came into effect the best the government should have done is to absolve the teachers into the tertiary institution payroll and allow the institution to employ new staff with a new terms of contract expressly stating it's new policies.

What I suspect is that the teachers have stayed away from teaching technically been on strike from 2015 to date because majority of teachers prior 2015 refused to accept the new terms of contract offered to the by the relevant institution.
Their best bet now is through the courts, I really sympathised with them.

Thank you for this. It’s an insight.

shocked

Yet Wike was busy donating money up North while neglecting to pay teachers salary. Oshisko

Majority of the Nigeria governors also have the same habit of owning most especially teachers cos they are state workers.

They should all remember they are not paying the money from their private pocket, state teachers are not that well paid why delaying delay their salaries..

Put your questions on paper, locate the nearest protesters match to your governors houses when they are have breakfasts if they will open the gates for you to see your elected leaders.

The worst part of it this, he has given our land to fulani to be producing black soot against the state indigents and residents.

We must pay a pleasant visit to our governors and their families. To say thank you for all they have done for us.

They didn't pay 3 months. Is it 5 years they will now pay?

I really don't know but I guess he should have let the Universities absolve the staff because the universities empleoyed them and seconded them to secondary and primary schools. That would have been a win win for all, unlike the current situation.

Maybe the governor wanted the tertiary institutions to pay the teacher's salaries.

(If I remember, and someone can correct me on this, there has been issues over who funds schools onwed by tertiary institutions...and Rivers isn't the only state with that issue )
their salaries may have been captured in the institution's wage bill.
