First thing everyone needs to understand is that employment is a two-way street. Employers and employees need each other. The employee is getting paid for a service s/he is offering the employer. It is an exchange of value for money. It is greed that makes some employers believe that they are doing employees a favor by hiring them. And some employees encourage this behavior from their employers by accepting all forms of unethical practices in the workplace. Yes, in Nigeria, abuse is common in the workplace because there are no jobs for millions of people and even some people who are employed are underemployed. But, for how long are we going to keep quiet and watch so-called employers take us for granted and abuse us or turn us into errand boys and girls (buying fufu and pepsi, flushing their toilet or picking their kids from school during work hours)? We have searched for practical solutions to this kind of abuse, and we have asked some people who have overcome these kinds of situations and the answer is always the same; As you are working in that abusive environment, don't give up on yourself. If you are still an entry level staff, search www.opportunitiesforafricans.com and look for scholarship opportunities in foreign schools. Apply to as many as you can, so you can leave the country on an academic visa. There are so many schools out there offering opportunities to people from developing countries like Nigeria. The website also contains several fellowships, and contests, for people of different ages. You can also start an online trade and use Instagram as your marketplace. As long as it is something people are willing to pay for, you will get the patronage you want. You can also connect with anyone who has links to people in government, specifically, state commissioners at the Federal Character Commission. Submit your credentials with your state commissioner and keep in touch with him/her for when opportunities open up in any of the government parastatals that conduct open recruitment. As you apply for scholarships, make sure you have a proper CV, cover letter and statement of purpose. Source - www.lingoafrica.com 2 Likes |
