The Resident Electoral Commissioner in charge of Kaduna State, Alhaji Haliru Tambuwal, yesterday explained why he visited the Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo at his residence last Saturday before the election was suspended. The sighting of the REC at the VP’s residence last Saturday made opposition political parties and their candidates jittery, even as many of them expressed reservation over the visit.

INEC chairman Professor Attahiru Jega had also warned the RECs against visiting government officials especially state governors, arguing that doing such will undermine their independence.

Chairman of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Kaduna State Barrister Musa Soba told Daily Trust on phone, that the REC’s visit to the vice president has given them a serious cause for concern.

According to him, the REC has no business visiting the VP, adding that his visit can thwart the move for a free, fair and transparent election in the state.

Can anyone tell me whats the business of the REC with the Vice President? What matters are they to discuss? Why didnt the REC avoid the meeting till after the elections if they had other matters to discuss other than rigging the election in Kaduna state? didnt the Kaduna REC know that the atmosphere is very charged at the moment and that visit could throw many fireworks?

Don't worry.
This election isn't like the others, RECs can't do the kind of centralized rigging they did in 2003 and 2007. This time around, the votes are tallied at each polling centre at the close of voting. All you have to do is hang around until the vote ends then watch them do the counting making sure there's no hanky-panky. Afterwards, post the results for your polling centre to nairaland with pictures. Then check the results that INEC Abuja announces to make sure they match. If you see anything suspicious, film it, share it post it to youtube and direct others to it. If we can get at least one person at each polling centre in the country to do this, then nobody can rig anywhere.

Cameraphones and the internet are what will save Nigeria from these criminals. PDP must go.
