IFAD blames Nigerian women decline in Agriculture on herdsmen's criminality

The International Fund for Agriculture Development has blamed young women's decline in Agriculture on herdsmen's criminality.

This was contained in a research funded by the organisation and backstopped by the Institute of Development Studies.

The Finding also blamed gender discrimination in access to resources, especially to land as another factor militating against young women
active participation in Agriculture.

These were disclosed in a two- day workshop by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Ibadan in conjunction with National Root Crops Research Institute , Umudike held in Awka, the Anambra State capital between 8th and 9th March.

The workshop was titled," Challenges and opportunities for rural youths employment in Sub-saharan Africa : A Qualitative Study and results presentation to inform policy and development stakeholders."

Unveiling the research in the Awka workshop, IFAD implored the Federal Government to address the issue of herder-farmer conflicts to reduce cases of attack on women on farmlands.

It called on traditional institutions to review rules on women inheritance , to enable women to have access to land for agriculture.
The IFAD-IDS Youth Research Project Lead representative in Nigeria had said the research which was commissioned in 2019 was "carried out in four
communities: two in Osun and Anambra States each.

"Indepth knowledge was acquired on the:
employment dynamics of rural young people, and relationships between
these dynamics and welfare; and socially and spatially differentiated perspectives and aspiration of rural young people.

"The main goal was to inform and influence policies, strategies and
programmes that can improve the conditions and opportunities of young
people in rural areas based on realistic futures that they imagine for
themselves.
The Minister of Youth and Sports,Sunday Dare, and other speakers on the occasion, enjoined the youth to make use of the various States and Federal Government youth empowerment programmes to better their future.
