in developed countries where government aids farmers watermelon yields as high as 10 thousand to 12 thousand balls per acre cause farmers are always provided with all it takes to grow watermelon successfully but in nigeria where every man is for himself/herself don't expect this yield as a practical farmer I always plant 3500 to 4500 seeds per acre and I always harvest not less than 2000 to 2500 balls per acre at times it's more than that figure but let's keep it at 2500 balls we all know the prices of watermelon in the market it ranges from 500naira downward depending on the size and season but let's keep it at 150naira for each ball now if you multiply 2500*150=375000 within 65 to 75 days in my next update I will be listing and analyzing the costs of planting watermelon on an acre of land 14 Likes 1 Share |

JeAgro477: This is very good analysis. Waiting for the cost analysis. In my experience tho, watermelon can be very profitable. One acre of watermelon can give you better gross income than one acre of Cassava, and the cost of growing the melon is lesser than the cost of growing Cassava. Plus, you sell in 10 weeks unlike a year for Cassava. But, it's very risky. I hope to plant it again sometime in the year. Is your farm located in the southwest? Mine is. What period of the year do you think is best for watermelon (for farmers who don't have drip irrigation)? 3 Likes |

Timmylehyn:the leaves getting dried is normal especially the first ones but in a situation where all leaves are drying is always either the plants lacks water or some nutrients or there's too much sunlight on them this can corrected by mulching or constructing ridges 1 Like |

Thanks for this succinct analysis. Two questions please 1.How did you control your weeds? - Manual, mechanical or chemical control 2. What is the difference between the insecticides you bought at N4,500 each and the imiforce you bought at N400 each? - price differentials appears to be high Thanks JeAgro477: 1 Like |
