Jesus died sacrificially for mankind, offering us the hope of living eternally, a gift beyond measure. The least we can do to show appreciation for this supreme display of love is to remember his death ON IT’S ANNIVERSARY and this he himself commanded his followers to continue doing as recorded in Luke 22 vs 19, 20. There we read of Jesus’ direct COMMAND to his followers “KEEP DOING THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME”, he was referring to the last supper he ate with his faithful apostles.

Therefore, all true Christians are under obligation to remember the death of Jesus as he commanded by commemorating the last supper on the anniversary of his death. The question however is when is the anniversary of Jesus’ death, in other words on what date did Jesus die which should thus become the date to observe the last supper in remembrance of him as he commanded?

We keep in mind, though, that anniversaries are done on the date the event first occurred and not on the day of the week it occurred. For example, if a couple got married on Friday November 6th 2019, the anniversary of their marriage is observed on Nov 6th every other year, not Friday of the first week every other year. The anniversary can fall on any day of the week, as such the day of the week is insignificant but Nov 6th is what matters.
Similarly, the date on which Jesus died occurred on a particular day of the week, but in observing it’s anniversary that day of the week is insignificant but the date, which can fall on any day of the week, is what matters. So, the question remains what is the date of Christ death on which the last supper should be commemorated to remember him AS HE COMMANDED?

Reading the account of Luke 22 from verse 1, we learn that Jesus and his apostles actually gathered to celebrate the annual Jewish PASSOVER and it was the left over bread and wine from that ceremony that he used to initiate the last supper ceremony which his followers were to continue observing in remembrance of him. After they finished, they went to the garden of gethsemane where Christ prayed intensively and three times came to find his apostles sleeping. By now it was close to midnight. Judas then led the band of men that came and arrested him in the garden and he was subjected to trial in the Jewish court all through the night. Close to dawn, Peter had already denied him three times and the rooster crowed. He was taken to Pilate and eventually handed over for execution. By noon he was on the stake close to death. When he eventually died there were lots of supernatural display, even an eclipse where day became night.

A typical Jewish day starts at Sun-down in the evening and runs till the next evening. So the day which started with Jesus and his apostles celebrating the passover at sun-down and instituting the last supper for his remembrance, was also the day Jesus was killed. In other words Christ died on the day of the annual Jewish passover festival – yes, he died on passover day. Going back in time, we recall that the passover festival was established by God for the Israelites to celebrate in memory of the night he delivered them from Egypt, killing all the firstborn of the Egyptians and preserving all firstborn of the Israelites. Thus the passover was celebrated annually at its DIVINELY APPOINTED DATE. That date is revealed in Leviticus 23 vs 5 as the EVENING of the 14th day of the first month. The first month of the Jewish calendar is Nisan (Abib), and corresponds to mid March to mid April on our calendar. So, Nisan 14 every other year was celebrated as Passover day by the Israelites down till Jesus time and he observed same with his apostles. God went as far as specifying the period of the day when it is to be observed – in the evening, which was the beginning of that new day, the 14th.
So, since Christ was killed on passover day, it’s date thus becomes the date of Christ death. Yes, Christ died on Nisan 14, of the year 33 CE (Nisan 14, 33 CE).

It thus becomes obvious that the DIVINELY APPOINTED DATE for the Jewish passover, remembering their deliverance from Egypt became the DIVINELY APPOINTED DATE for the last supper ceremony, remembering the death of our Lord Jesus Christ. In other words, the date lives on but the purpose for its celebration changed. It is also easy to see that the passover lamb usually slaughtered on passover day was actually pointing to Christ as the lamb of God who will be slaughtered on that same day.

Christians are obligated to obey the COMMAND of their master Jesus Christ to celebrate the last supper ceremony in remembrance of him on the anniversary of his death, Nisan 14 every other year. For this year 2021, Nisan 14 on the Jewish calendar corresponds to March 27 on our calendar. So March 27, 2021 is the anniversary of Christ death and there is no better thing to do on that day than to obey the command of our Lord Jesus recorded in Luke 22 vs 19, 20. Jesus is currently alive in heaven as a powerful spirit King. He well remembers the date of his death and the COMMAND he gave his followers. There is no doubt that he will be on the lookout on that day to see those who are obeying that command as his true followers . Won’t you rather be seen as one of his true followers?
