Very soon Nigeria will be operating on Monopolistic economy where only an individual will determine market forces on goods and services.

Government has the audacity to finance a huge refinery of that magnitude but cannot build public refineries, even the commonest of all, modular refineries became a deadlock after serious national discussions and debates by professionals and economist of its important to the deregulation of the downstream of the oil sector.

Our leaders especially this present government have sectarian interest in all their dealings. Only favouring a particular region but yet poverty stricken North cannot even realize itself to come to 21st century realities.

Dangote has destroyed so many businesses who are marketing the same product with him in the market. He controls and regulate the price regime at will. How can a country grow that does not want competition? Let the richest man come from the North, and the ass licking Northerners are happy they have the richest man.

Insane country with mad men in it.

With Dangote's involvement in the oil sector...The playing field isn't totally level.....

If you scrutinize this issue properly.... You'll find that after the Judiciary... executive and legislature..... Dangote is the fourth arm of the government.

I'm not saying this is bad....He has provided a lot of employment to Nigerians... something the government still struggles with.....But there's also a cost.....

It's like he's telling the Government I'll employ your citizens if you put me a step ahead of others when it comes the business affairs of the Nation..

And this isn't fair to other investors also....I stand to be corrected...but I feel this is an indirect way through which the Government involves itself...and it doesn't create a levelled playing field

Dangote is a private entity and has every right to be involved in any business venture.
Anybody that is not happy about it should go and build his own network.
We are in a capitalist society, and it's a winner take all situation. The problem in Nigeria is we don't like forming mergers. You are only as big as your current circle of people around you.

Look at that word: We import fuel from countries that don't produce fuel.
Sighs.

It is obvious that you did not comprehend the argument put forward by Chief Femi Falana.

Chief Femi Falana is right though. It is shame to the present and past government that none bothered to build at least a functional refinery.
See one of them, you must find a way to add the past administration. Wasn't it buhari that promised to repair Nigerian refineries? What about the ajaokuta steel project that he used to deceive the Yoruba's and Middle Belt?

If you think you are wise and you can do better than government of the day give answer to the following questions.

1. How many refinary do we have in Nigeria, location and capacity should be stated

2. List 5 reason why they are not functional
.
3. Who are the stake holder in the said institution

4. List your workable solution in make the refinaries up and running

5. How will finance your budget. What will be the project duration.

It's actually not a shame at all, most refinaries in the world particularly in the so called advance world are not own by government, they are suppose to be owned by private individuals, our government need to work on regulations to allow private sector thrive instead of competing with them in businesses.

The kind of regulation we need from government has gave birth to the largest refinary in th world.

What's the noise about.

Dangote is a private company, but due to the fact his from northern Nigeria, his fellow northern politicians/Senators will push policies that favor him and his business. its the same reason borders were opened for him and B:U:A....

oscarline2002 stop saying "our leaders", because your leaders are senators/politicians who have the same ethnicity as you, so a senator that is not the same ethnicity as you is not your leader.

when crude was selling over $100 GEJ and his fellow southern senators/politicians could have built Bayelsa petroleum company, Akwa-ibom petroleum company, rivers petroleum company e.t.c. but they didn't...

the biggest companies including refineries have their government as major investors ( ownership stake )...

the government is the one with the most money so why shouldn't they own and create indigenous companies..

Oga, read in between the lines, Falana doesn’t castigates Dangote rather he commended him and castigated FG who has all the resources to build 2 refineries Within 4 years But kept wasting the resources and inflicted suffering into masses.

If only there was a word more powerful than "shameless"... The country is waiting for a refinery owned by a private individual. Meanwhile the project is being financed by the CBN. The CBN has the money to finance such a huge project for a private individual who is the richest man in Africa, but no money anywhere for the federal government to set up it's own. It's not as if the price of fuel will reduce once dangote's refinery starts operations.

Clueless and shameless government.

if you think those Refineries by Dangote was his own alone then you're uninformed, Buhari and his goons might be the owner of that refinery while agreement might be between them and Dangote on percentage to share

This is an oil-producing country and on a yearly basis huge money is an earmark for fixing refineries.
But instead of fixing refineries, our government pre democracy and since 1999 imports fuel from other countries including from countries that don’t produce fuel.

There was a country!

If indeed this present administration was serious about taking away hardship from the Nigeria populace, the first thing that the president would have done as the substantive minister of that sector was to immediately fix the four existing refineries while ensuring that more refineries are built to compliment the already existing ones!

I don't care how much is needed...even if it means getting loans to fix or build the refineries!
This is a sector that affects virtually everything in the country!

I still keep wondering why its now rocket science to fix or build a single referiery despite the humongous funds going into that sector in terms of turn around maintenance and salary payments!

What is his argument?

It was the same Falana in 2012 that argued against Iweala and Sanusi, suggesting that the government continue managing oil subsidies. At that time Nigeria was spending $8 billion on oil subsidies, funds that could have been used to repair the the existing refineries.

Government should be creating an enabling environment for entrepreneurs to build refineries and petrochemical plant. The refineries that the government has built till this day are not working, yet this loud mount wants the government to build a new one.
