Are Herdsmen Doing Business or Philanthropic Service?

The open support given by the President to the herdsmen is obvious for all to see. What the President is not telling us is whether he honestly see these herders as doing the business of cattle rearing or a humanitarian work.

The atrocities committed by these herdsmen in the course of doing their 'work' are well documented. No single week passes without the report of some form of notoriety committed by them. In spite of these, the call from the President has always been for the affected people or communities to bear with the herdsmen and even to be more accommodating.

Would the reaction be the same if any other group in the name of carrying out their work commit these same atrocious acts? The answer I think is obvious.

It is clear that the herders rear their cattle for profit. They don't rear them only to donate them to charity. They are therefore in the business of making money from their cattle rearing.

They should then, like every other business, follow the laid down regulations of the government for running their business. Just as it will be unacceptable for a company to just go into any available land to do its business even when it will produce items that will be beneficial to those around it, the same should apply to these herders in the cattle rearing business. That the President does not seem to see it this way leaves room for worry.

Are some to do their business in any way they deem fit and with utter disregard to the rules of the land? Are there 'sacred cows' when it comes to doing business; even when it is in the same sector of animal husbandry? That this is clearly so means that there is some other motivation for the President's support for the herdsmen than an economic one.

That consideration is tribal. There is the tendency in the human to be 'soft' towards those who belong to the same group as one. Their excesses are either excused or overlooked. That same attitude has been and is still being expressed by the President to the herdsmen. Because majority, if not all of them, are from his ethnic group he ignores their ills. By doing that he shows himself as being sectional. In a multi-ethnic society as Nigeria that is not a trait a President should flaunt at the people.

Government must not only be able to recognize problems but must be decisive in its approach to solving them. Where this is not so it ends up creating a situation of distrust in the government leading to individuals and groups looking for solutions to the problem. We are seeing that right now. And unless those in governance choose to do the right thing we can only expect a further breakdown of the situation.

Hmnnn....and some people still don't understand what is happening in Nigeria.

In case you don't know what is happening in Nigeria. The Fulani mision is to keep Nigeria one so that they can conquer it and make it their own.

-That is why they refuse to allow the country to be divided.
- That is why they refuse to allow true federalism, with the fear that it is a step towards break up.
- That is why they pretend to be fighting bandits while actually giving them money to fund them.
- That is why Fulani can carry AK47 and kill people, but the police will arrest their victims who try to defend themselves.
-That is why they have spread themselves all over Nigeria, and they are well armed.
- That is why if you dare challenge them, they will use the state police and military against you.

I hope you understand now.

So, if you don't want to be their victim, the people have to organize themselves and fight them without depending on any government.
