The question is straightforward.

Is there any risk to cutting in the market or cutting before washing?
As a bachelor I allow them to cut but if I get married to Zzor she will cut it for me in the kitchen we will make good husband and wife sharing house chores together

I must confess that I have it cut in the market because I dislike cutting it myself with all the leaves sticking to my fingers. So, I prefer it done in the market then when I get home, I soak with plenty of water in a large bowl to enable the sand( if any) settle below while the leaves stay afloat. So it's easier to get out the dirts.

Lazyness is my major problem here because after doing the market runs, I don't like to come and start prepping those stuff myself as I would be so tired and fagged out to do anything.

I believe you noticed change of colour on the water to green........ You just washed the better part of the nutrient away.
Re: Do You Cut Your Vegetables In The Market? by sojfarm: 1:39pm On Mar 26, 2021
There is tangible risk.

Even as a man, if I want to cook by myself. I buy the vegetable, prepare it very well (so as to ensure that I remove all the dirts).

It is actually laziness to allow the market woman do the cutting for you (because there could be some insects hiding in the leaves which have to be meticulously removed or shaken off).

When preparing you foods, hygiene is very key otherwise, it becomes poison unknowingly.

Truth be told I was trained by my mother to wash vegetables before cutting .It is actually the best and safest way of preparing vegetables.

However I have grown very old and I hate cooking with a passion ,i really do not have anything against cutting vegetables in the market .Just wash with salt when you get home. lipsrsealed

How old exactly? You know why I'm asking.

Sincerely i also never had issues with cutting vegetables in the market until 2 weeks ago when i decided to try it out. The dirts in the main vegetables, the seed and all was not even sorted. The stress i went through sorting them out was much more time consuming than the time it would have taken me to cut at home myself.
I almost cried o

Like someone said, "something must kill a man." The hot water will kill the germs. I can't cut my fingers because of vegetables.

Hmmm I cut it in the market o,it all boils down to laziness sha. But I wash and wash and rewash till it's very clean.

I just knew today that washing before cutting preserves nutrients o,never knew. No wonder the water becomes greenish after washing the already cut ones from the market.

Some of these market vegetable sellers/cutters will have cuts on their hands during the process and the blood will start dripping on the vegetable.

Cut ur vegetables at home, wash before cutting and wash after cutting to get ur vegetables clean and devoid of dirts.
Won't you wash it? Dont u look at them while cutting? Wont they have a reaction when they cut their hand? Nawa

I just love that you ring in my head as a very hygienic person. cheesy

I shiver when I see persons seated and ask Mallam to cut their finger / toe nails. Much like asking maid to wash your pants.

For God sake, ain't you gonaa do some stuffs by yourself including cutting vegetables that you want to eat!

I cannot and will never allow one Iya Oshogbo to cut my vegetables

This is civilized age.

Hyegene is more important now than it was before.

Many reasons are there to make a sane person chose to sort her vegetables at home before cutting.

Do you know that spiders, flies, little roaches, insects, caterpillars, ants etc are found in vegetables most of the times?

Certainly I am not the only person who have seen dead flies or any of the aforementioned in a meal at one time or the other before. That usually happen when items to be cooked (especially veges) are not sorted carefully.

Don't forget that some of these creatures take the leaves you want to cook as their home, then they pluck those leave for you to buy and cook.

WHEN LEAVES ARE CUT, YOU CAN'T WASH IT THOROUGHLY ANY MORE LIKE YOU COULD, WHEN IT WASN'T CUT.

BESIDES, CUTTING LEAVES AFTER WASH HELP TO PRESERVE THE NUTRIENTS. TRY WASHING THE VEGETABLES AFTER CUTTING IT AND YOU WILL SEE THE COLOUR OF YOUR WATER.
THE GREENESS OF YOUR WATER TELLS YOU THE NUTRIENTS ARE LEAVING YOUR LEAVES.

This was my experience 2weeks ago. To get very fresh vegetable with minimal chemical used in planting, i have to travel to a nearby town. Got there, bought 1k worth vegetables and said i should try the market women cutting.

On getting back home, set to cook, the vegetables had lots of seed unsorted, lots of weed, i began sorting then realized the time/stress used in sorting and the quantity i had to throw away ehn. I almost cried, i was pained and told myself if it is not extremely pressing and i sit with the women, i wouldnt try such again.

Abeg who dey eat food primary because of nutrient? I eat because I'm hungry, secondly because of the taste, nutrients come last. I can't cook well garnished egusi soup and because I washed off small green colour, the nutrient I was supposed to get will now be reduced by 80%.
Back to the topic, I can spend three to fours hours cooking and I enjoy it but cutting vegetables is the part that tires me the most. If it's just ₦100 or ₦200 vegetable, I can manage to cut it myself but when it comes to ₦400+ vegetables, fvck I'm getting it cut in the market grin grin, though I'll have to wash it for longer time.

For afang soup, I let them do the cutting and I do the washing...

For Edikan Ikong soup, I do the cutting and the washing... But sometimes, I let the market women to cut the water leaf and I slice the ugu at home, because I love my ugu extremely sliced and beautifully green...

Then I wash my vegetables with vinegar... A little drop of it.... Or if I run out of Vinegar, I soak the vegetable for briefly 2minutes with salts and rinse it and slice them.

Vinegar really helps to disinfect all sorts of germs and same with salt.

Before the sellers cut, they wash. And you rinse when you're about cooking in a deep bowl of water. So in the process, all the animals you mentioned would have been washed off.

Pumpkin leaf
