1. Irrigation problems: rainfall is seasonal, scarce especially in the Northern part of the country. This causes crop failure. The low-lying food plains are very fertile during the rainy season, but the lack of the rain during dry season hinders agricultural development. The lack of water management systems in these areas is a concern for many farmers.

2. Soil infertility: the problems of farmers in Nigeria begin with the soil. Poor soil, land and environmental degradation and soil erosion lead to low productivity and loss of valuable agricultural lands.

3. Poor access to modern inputs and credit: the problems that constrain Nigerian farmers also include scarcity and high cost of improved farm inputs and credit facilities, inefficient inputs supply and distribution system, poor infrastructure, and inadequate research and extension services. To sum, the problem lies in over dependence on crude and obsolete farming implements.

4: Insufficient funds: Nigerian farmers encounter the problems of funds needed for running a farm. Many peasant farmers do not have enough money to buy artificial fertilizers and better varieties of seeds which can help to improve their yields.

5. Lack of electricity: farmers encounter the problems of electricity. Over 40% of Nigeria's perishable goods get spoilt after harvest due to the lack of electricity needed for storage and processing.

6. Inadequate access to market: farmers suffer from lack of good roads needed for the transportation of harvested crops from farm land to the main road. Most farms are located about a mile from the main road and the only entrance to these farms are mostly a path beaten by the foot of men.

7. Lack of adequate manpower or personnel: a major problem of agricultural labour supply arises from the increasing migration of able-bodied youths from rural to urban areas causes shortage of labour on farms.

8. Lack of investment: the problems of agriculture in Nigeria are also caused by a lack of investment. The government budget for agriculture is not enough to meet the challenges. International bodies provide the assistance, but most of the funds don't reach the local farmers.

9. Impact of imported food: Nigeria is net importer of food. A lack of development and the dependence on imported food hinder the development of agriculture in Nigeria. Nigeria does not produce enough food to meet the demand of its people. When cheaper foods are imported, local farmers who don't enjoy incentives must reduce the price, which consequently reduces the income generated by the farm.

10. Poor storage facilities: a lot of products get spoilt in Nigeria because of poor storage facilities. Storage methods are not generally up to standards. Most of the crops are lost to physical damage caused by insects, bacteria, or fungus.
