The faceless figure behind the cryptocurrency Bitcoin has become one of the richest people ever to walk the Earth.

Satoshi Nakamoto is believed to be worth over $62billion (£44billion) despite their identity remaining a total mystery.

According to Forbes, when compared against the richest people in the world, the Bitcoin creator would come in at number 19.

A pretty impressive position considering the short time period the currency has been on the market.

Bitcoin was the first digital currency created and uses complex mathematical equations to create or "mine" more cryptocurrency.

Bitcoin was created in 2009 by an unidentified coder known only as Satoshi Nakamoto who is believed to own about one million Bitcoin - or five per cent of the currency that will ever be created, writes The Sun.

One Bitcoin is equivalent to $63,000 (£46,000) which puts Nakamoto's wealth at around $62billion (£44billion).

What makes the story of Bitcoin so alluring is that no one knows who Nakamoto is, there are suggestions that it could be a group of people rather than just one individual.

Currently, the wallets hold 980,000 Bitcoins, but they have not been used in more than a decade - this has led to some people speculating that Nakamoto is in fact dead.

Bitcoin's currency value has jumped 900% in the last 12 months with mainstream companies beginning to embrace its use.

The concept of Bitcoin was set out in 2009 under the white paper name "Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System."

Over the years a number of other individuals have been touted as the real Satoshi Nakamoto or claimed to be themselves, but in truth, the mystery rages on.

Microsoft boss Bill Gates recently warned that if you aren't as rich as Elon Musk then you probably should stay clear of Bitcoin.

Asked if he had invested, Gates said he preferred to invest in companies that "make products".
