Emotive language is the one that writers use to have a more significant emotional impact on their audience. Words have the power to evoke emotions that can be positive or negative. People need to be aware of the effect this language can have on your reader.

In technical terms, it refers to the deliberate choice of words to elicit emotions. A writer should care about emotive language because it influences others and generates the interest of readers.

For instance,

The government will diminish the interest rates. - Non-emotive language

The government will slash the interest rates - Emotive language

Let us take another one!

Mr Smith was attacked by someone for two minutes. – Non-emotive language

For what seemed a lifetime. Mr Smith was subjected to a cowardly and vicious assault by a steroid pumped monster.

Talking about the negative and positive-sounding versions, let us take an example to get a clear understanding.

She is svelte- Positive Emotion

She is skinny- Negative Emotion

Point to remember!

When using emotive language, you are the judge and the narrator at the same time.
