Isn't there an order of precedent in the Chadian government? Wasn't there a Vice President who could have taken over when Deby died? By what right does the military get to bypass any constitutional arrangements to install Deby's son in power, as if they were some sort of royal family?

All this senseless praise of Deby for his "anti islamist" credentials, all the while ignoring the man's typical African "big man" style of sitting 30 years in office without allowing any sensible opposition. Has it ever occurred to any of you Deby apologists that the Islamist movements against the Chadian government have actually been encouraged by the 30 years of totally unaccountable despotism led by Deby?

When the only form of opposition tolerated by a government is the religious kind, it's no surprise that they become the main challenge to any sit-tight regime: we've seen this all across the world from the Shah's Iran, to Syria under Assad, to Egypt under first Sadat and then Mubarak, and now, to the rebels under Deby. There probably wouldn't be any Islamists for Deby to fight in the first place if he'd bothered to foster a democratic state which enjoyed decent governance, just as Boko Haram wouldn't exist if successive Nigerian governments had concentrated on governing instead of negligent elites trading places to "chop" oil money in Abuja, leaving "their" people in places like Borno to fester in poverty and ignorance.

What are you saying...His Father took power a young man (age 38 yrs) and held it for 30years. The boy is 37 yrs. Hopefully he would outlive his father as President. What has changed!!

The rebels will keep fighting until they are defeated or the military loyal to the government is defeated. If the son can quickly crush the rebels, he will consolidate and start another era of sit-tight dictatorship. The rebels either regroups or another one is formed to start the war all over again. It’s an unending cycle that leads to nowhere. Nothing is ever going to change for the ordinary folks.

The problem with them is their sit-tight in power. They should practice true democracy maximum of 2 terms 4 or 5 years per term. At least who ever is opposed to the leader’s rule will still have opportunity to contest since his tenure will be over.why won’t their be crisis when you ruled a nation for more than 30 years and u still want to continue.
Even does their constitution didn’t state the position of Vice President. How do will they experience peace now when they pass leadership to his son. Is that what their construction really state.
Let’s even applaud we Nigerians, imagine if a ruler continues to rule for long here what would have happened. The one that even wants to we know what happened. For peace to rein they should set a limit in their constitution to rule and even if a leader dies the next person in command should rule as its stated in their constitution.

Good development?

The country is practising democracy, not military government or monarchy. This is a rape on democracy. For now, the speaker or whoever is next in command to the presidency should be an acting president while another election is conducted.

His son should remain in the battle front or present himself for election for proper election as a president.

I don't understand your analysis, if the country is practicing democracy then the Vice President should be sworn in as the new President and not new new Election

He wasn’t, he was France’s poodle and terrorism would decline in West Africa without the like of Idris Derby and the support of foreign Western and Arabic nations.

Which islamic terrorist?
He himself was a dissident who took full advantage of the situation and perpetuated himself in power.
He was battling against rebel front headed by his cousin before he met his death only to be succeeded by his own son.

Idris Derby was a good Muslim; a non extremist. Though he ruled Chad for a long time and with iron fist, but that was needed to stabilize a country that was (still is) surrounded by diehard Islamic fundamentalists and Jihadists. Idris was a painful thorn in the flesh of those terrorists including Nigeria's Boko haram. If not for him, boko haram guys would have overran most parts of north eastern Nigeria.

He was a strong ally of the US and other western powers in the fight against terrorism in the sahel. It is in the best security interest of Nigeria that his son,who has been chosen to succeed him,is able to hold the country together and follow in the footsteps of his father.

Derby was a brave soldier and I personally like him for his anti terrorism's stance.

Rip strong man of the sahel !

You get the scope. Guys like Derby make sure that islamists are all over and then point tonielwmists and say that if you remove us those mad people will take over.

They create the excuse to justify them from ruling. Same thing happened in Algeria that led to civil war after the Islamists actually won election and the generals cancelled it.

Derby was a mad man and his generals killed him to lower tension in the polity. His son will take over but will be controlled by his father's mates unless he can be sharp and break free.

I’m suspecting a coup. The circumstances leading to Derby’s death is vague. If the rebels can truly get to the president, they should have gotten to the son and other top military leaders. How the rebels killed the president who ordinarily should be the most protected person in the war front without killing the top generals is suspicious.

Nothing is suspicious about it. If you know the type of person Idriss Deby Itno was, you wouldn't talk like this. He wasn't a war leader who leads by hiding in the shadows. He really stays at the front where he could be shot. I have wondered for years what gave him such confidence. He stays in harms way when leading and the rebels knew this.

You didn’t read their statement. They said the son will lead the transitional council for 18 months before elections will hold. Chad is not the type of established democracy as we have in Nigeria. Even before this President died, he had been a dictator.

the president of the national assembly was supposed to take over. That's what is in their constitution. The son has committed a coup whether he killed his dad or not.

C'mon man, dont mix jihadism and the rebel issue (Deby's trick). The Erdimis and the other northerners that opposed Deby pre date jihadism. It's in Lake chad that u have rebel-jihadist marriage. These guys are tryin to seize power for themselves, same way deby did from Habre.

Remember that since the northerners kicked out Tomalbaye and Malloum they have all been competing militarily with each other. Gukuni, Deby and Djamous, Habre etc.

This specific movement is carrying 1991 Habre beef (Tubu sentiment) and dont like the Deby clan. It's all for loot and power. Deby up played the jihadist threat to garner support.
