The Special Drawing Rights (SDR) is expected to replace the U.S dollars as the new global currency. Technically, the SDR is an artificial currency that is the International Monetary Funds (IMF) reserve assets and is exchangeable for dollars, euros, sterling, yen, and yuan or renminbi. The SDR is expected to serve as a supplementary foreign exchange for countries.

In the wave of the pandemic, most countries are requesting financial support from the IMF. To respond to these requests, there are considerations by the IMF to use the SDR to provide support for, especially low-income countries. SDRs are allocated pro-rata to a country's IMF "quota".

How will Nigeria benefit from this new development?
