If u quote something to prove a point, something else can be quoted to disprove it. Not only that, you don't know what has been embellished, mis-translated, or just made up. The SPIRIT is what let's you see through all that to the nature of the Person you claim to be following - His Spirit. So someone shows u where it says an eye for an eye or Sodom, u don't have to read anything to know that does not tally with the Spirit. Same way, you don't have to read anything to know that communal shunning does not tally with the Spirit. In all non-cultlike churches people are encouraged to come to church no matter how sinful they think they have become. Paul himself said he'd stay with the weak to have a chance to win them.
