[EXCLUSIVE] UI Governing Council May Extend Acting Vc’s Tenure Illegally by Kwanza: 11:31am On May 15, 2021 |
The University of Ibadan Council may extend the tenure of Professor A. B. Ekanola as acting Vice Chancellor of the Premier University, SATURDAY INDEPENDENT can authoritatively report.
Investigation revealed that a meeting is being planned for Monday to consider elongation of tenure which is clearly against the law of appointing a VC for the Institution.
According to the law guiding the appointment of acting vice chancellors, the Senate is to appoint another qualified person as acting VC and not the extension of tenure of the incumbent acting VC.
SATURDAY INDEPENDENT’s investigations reveal that already, lobbying for and against has begun in UI ahead of the Council meeting on Monday.
According to a document exclusively available to SATURDAY INDEPENDENT, the institution is in a big financial mess (debts) which is being investigated quietly by the anti-graft agencies due to the mal-administration of the previous administration.
This has led to a breakdown of infrastructure on the campus with erratic power supply and lack of water supply in the past two or three months except for a few boreholes sunk. There are also bad roads on the campus.
In a letter by the Governing Council to the Senate on its decision on the expiration of the present acting VC’s tenure, exclusively obtained by SATURDAY INDEPENDENT with the heading “The Expiration of the Six Month Appointment of the Acting Vice Chancellor (01 December 2020 – 31 May 2021) stated that:
“Following the expiration of the tenure of Prof. I. A. Olayinka as Vice Chancellor on 30 November, 2020, the Governing Council on the recommendation of Senate of the University appointed Prof. A. B. Ekanola as Acting Vice Chancellor for a period of six (6) months, effective 01 December, 2020. “In accordance with the extant law stipulated in the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Amendment Act of 2003, Section 5, Sub-section (14) which states that “An Acting Vice Chancellor in all circumstances, shall not be in office for more than 6 months”, the attention of Council was drawn to the fact that the 6 month appointment of Prof. A. B. Ekanola as Acting Vice Chancellor would expire on Monday, 31 May, 2021.
“However, Council at its meeting of Wednesday 05 May, 2021 noted that the process of appointing a substantive Vice Chancellor could not be concluded due to the dissolution of the Governing Council.
“Given the circumstance, a vacuum cannot be created in the office of the Vice Chancellor and CEO of the University in that if the appointment of a substantive Vice Chancellor cannot be concluded before 31 May, 2021, the position of the Ag. Vice Chancellor shall lapse.
“Therefore, Council advised that Senate should consider the above matter and make its recommendation to Council.
Senate is hereby requested to consider.” https://independent.ng/exclusive-ui-governing-council-may-extend-acting-vcs-tenure-illegally/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitterMynd44 Lalasticlala |
