executive12: You skipped some parts of the narration of this history, perhaps you didn't know those parts. So here goes: • The first opportunity to ensure a peaceful breakup was first bungled by Nnamdi Azikiwe in 1959. The upcoming Nigerian constitution was to be drawn in Britain and in attendance were the stakeholders. Awolowo maintained that a "secession clause" should be included in the constitution. This will ensure that in the event of any group being dissatisfied with the union, it is free to peacefully negotiate her exit from the union. But Nnamdi Azikiwe had to go behind him to tell the British to expunge that clause. • The second opportunity for maintaining the hitherto regional development and progress that was happening in the union, and maybe a possible secession by any dissatisfied region thru its own laws was again bungled in the 1967 coup by Kaduna Nzeogwu. After the coup, Aguiyi Ironsi was installed the head of state and one of the first things he did was to abolish the regional system of governance, removed the position of the prime minister and created the federating government which Nigeria practices today and which southerners are calling for an end to today. Unfortunately, things didn't go as planned and the North staged a counter coup and seeing the lopsided benefit the "federating government" creates in their favour, decided to keep it and fought to hold on to power in order to mainted that lopsidedness which we see today in form of clannishness and nepotism. • Then came the third opportunity, the Biafra war which you mentioned and which as you rightly put it, Nigerians resisted. But the war wasn't really an opportunity in the strictest sense of it. It is a war that would never have been if the first and second opportunities were present. Matter of factly, the secession should have been a bloodless one as opposed to the bloody war had those two opportunities that were bungled were present. In between those first and second opportunities were some not too notable occurrences that ensured further division of the south as against the strong unity of the North. Like the pact Nnamdi Azikiwe made his political party have with the north when he went behind Awolowo to meet with the North. This was against the initial agreement between the duo to have a strong southern political party. However Azikiwe had a more "convenient" North-South amalgam. So there you have it. Well, we may have another bloodless opportunity soon, apparently created by Buhari's government having contested and failed three different times in a row. I hope the south coalition continues strongly in order to fully exploit that opportunity and seal the chance. |

Owologbo:Can't you see it yourself Since 1955 pre independence anytime the south goes left the north goes right (whether that right is hell or not) They call it checkmating, it would continue to remain so. North remains the problem of this country Since south has decided to go forward with the 21st century, they took have decided to go backward to the 12th century Their destruction of their land with Terrorists, almajiri, etc is delibrate |
