Guy as you are running this nursing courses better be looking for opportunities abroad which are plenty. Do the right exams and courses finish up and discharge.

You'll be far better of than everyone who laughed at you. A male nurse has many advantages in the work place. They can hustle better than the females and get side jobs more.

Guy I dey laugh.

I will tell you what I told a friend's cousin that became a friend back then. He was in a nursing school visiting us in the uni and his complain was very similar to yours. I have always known there are male nurses right from childhood because there was one in a hospital close to our house and he was liked by everyone. So I advice my friend to be proud of his Course. He should concentrate and finish with good grades and the sky will be his starting point.

He continued with his course, finished and went to China where he later studied Medicine and from there to the UK for further studies.

Do not give too much thoughts to irrelevant side talks that will never add anything good to you but will instead dampen your morale. All you have to do is concentrate, finish with very good grades and have a very good practical knowledge of it too. With that you are then free to fly..
Thank you

Bro, I have not heard anyone saying it is an abomination for males to study nursing.

The point is that not many people know about male nurses (depending on your location or where you come from). The societal mindset is that nursing is for females, and this is further fuelled by the dominance of females in the profession.
God bless you!

So when people express their attitude at you studying nursing, they are simply displaying their ignorance or narrow-mindedness. There are thousands of male nurses in Nigeria, and abroad.

Nursing is one of the quickest way to making it in life. You spend 3 years to gain your basic RN diploma, plus another 12 or 18 months to have your post- basic diploma, then with 1 or 2 years of work experience you are in hot demand abroad.
Once you are abroad, you can do your Bsc, MSc and phd (if you wish) with ease even while working.

Pass your English exams and you are in demand in UK, Canada etc. One nurse that works abroad in the family can liberate a family from poverty.

But then, don't just go into nursing because of money or to make it quickly in life. Make sure it's your passion to care for people. The passion is what will sustain you through training and on your working life as there some times that you may feel like quitting.

So leave those people expressing their ignorance, and move on.... You don't need their approval.

Life is Life!

I'm currently on admission at the Federal medical centre ebute metta male surgical ward for a corrective procedure on my legs. We just have 3 male nurses and they are superb. They know so much. When the doctors are doing theit rounds you see them with notebooks jotting down and asking questions. Something their female counterparts don't do. I love it when one of them is on duty. There was an incident when my canola removed and all the nurses in the ward could not fix it. They were waiting for the doctors to come fix it, cos of that I did not get any IV drugs for the whole day. The next day it was one of the male nurse that fixed it and it was less painful. I have chatted with all of them and they all want to jakpa out of the country very soon. Don't let anyone discourage you it's a fine course and I'm sure you will do just fine. Next time any one wants to play the gender card on you, just ignore them and raise your shoulders high. No doubt it's a field dominated by females. Don't let that disuade you. It's an opportunity for you to be noticed on time once you are diligent committed and hardworking. Go for gold my brother.
Wow! It really touched my soul! shocked

Male nurses make it more than the female.
When you you are through with your general nursing, please try and go for a specialty course like anaesthetic nursing.
Thank me later......

just shut up niggah, I'm one myself. And doctors respect themselves around me. Do you know what a BNS.c degree mean?
Better remove your mind from those quack nurses who do 2 years training with their primary six cert or those with diploma, who are a lot better.
If A diploma nurse in Nigeria earns between 70-100k in Nigeria
His much do you think a degree holder will earn as a nurse.
Better change your orientation.
Go to any hospital, in every 10 nurses only 1 or 2 are degree holders the rest are basic RN,

Most hospitals can't afford to pay a Nurse who went through the university to get his/her BNS.c with a starting salary of 120k in federal settings except in some hospitals were it's a little lower.
That's good to know. It'll be nice to contact you personally.... please?

don't let anything stop you from becoming one.
I'm currently in my pen ultimate year, had to go for it...

When we started we were outnumbered 100 female to 20 males but now others joined through direct entry and we're like 100 females to 40 males now, lower levels are even better with a huge number of males,
And some matrons do tell us they are happy we males are feeling the gap that made other health professionals to look down on them because they are female.
Even as a nurse I've had to put many doctors in their place for daring to ask me to fetch some items,

And in any hospital, male nurses are like doctors. Again there was this notion some of my colleagues (students) had that nurses don't fix an IV (drip) line, but I got to do it seeing my male chief nurse doing it. I asked him same question, he told me some female nurses out of laziness don't like fixing the cannula (drip line) because it's difficult sometimes to locate the vain to place it.
Few years to come NIGERIAN youths will change the stereotype of nursing being a female profession.
Your story is really legendary and has inspired me. Can you be my mentor and I can have your contact?

@ JBRiichard, listen to me and listen good..

It is an abomination and I will prove it to you.

Male doctors are fond of cruising female nurses as they like, they use female nurses and dump them like rags. Can you as a male nurse even ask a female doctor out on a date?

Male nurses find it very difficult to get relationship partners because no one wants to date them. Not even female nurses.
your brain must surely be a second

As a make Student nurse many stories from. My side abounds, but it's for personal consumption only.

I feel sorry for you though.. You are so low on self esteem that you had to start body building to make yourself attractive to the opposite gender.
Well, NEWS FLASH: Body building will not cut it, you and your kind will always be looked down upon in the medical circles because you are a male nurse. You are a fa!!lure who couldn't meet up with the academic rigours that is required to be a doctor.

Going about insulting people who told you the truth will not even improve your chances in life.

not really, I'm naturally well built.
Oh, the respect I get from, patients and doctors even as a student is enough and can better be experienced...I'm from a family of medical doctors. I chosed nursing for the few years you spend and considerating the fact that they are more paid with less work in developed countries and male nurses are preferred to the female.

I know you can't really understand what I wrote up there. Its ok and normal for brainless squirrels like you.

I just feel so sorry for you. Your are Pathetic and lack exposure. Am sure you haven't left the four walls of your father's house. You and your kind are one of the reasons people stop giving advice on Nairaland. Simply becos ignorant, insecure humans like you will turn around behind closed doors to implement on them but will come here to degrade such advice. So sad. Talk about INSECURITY ISSUES AT ITS PEAK.

From your comment, it also shows you must be a teenager who hasn't seen life yet. If you are not and you are truly an adult, I feel more sad for you. Believe me. Grow up. Read Wide. Be Exposed.

If your only advice could be this stupid rubbish below...
"Can you as a male nurse even ask a female doctor out on a date?" shows the emptiness of your brain to the topic in question.
Like seriously, is that all you can think of Grow up Child.

I will encourage you to see a Therapist before you explode becos there is alot bottled up from where that is coming from.
