Joshua Vs Fury Fight Could Be OFF As Court Orders Fury To Fight Wilder by ogbiwa: 6:25am On May 18, 2021 |
Tyson Fury has been ordered to face Deontay Wilder for a third time, throwing his undisputed clash with Anthony Joshua into serious doubt. The WBC heavyweight champion has been in arbitration with the American Wilder for months over a contracted third fight between the pair. A US judge has now ruled he must take on Wilder again as per the contract. But Fury could pay him a substantial sum to step aside to rescue the clash with Joshua in Saudi Arabia on August 14. Fury, 32, beat Wilder back in February 2020 to take the WBC title after their first meeting ended in a controversial draw. But in the contract there was due to be a third clash between the pair. That was pencilled in for July 2020 but it was delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Then it was pushed back until December but both sides could not agree on a date. Wilder's team wanted to push it back further into early 2021 but Fury did not want to wait any longer. The Gypsy King said he was moving on from the fight, was set to compete in December and then focus on a bout with WBA, IBF and WBO champion Joshua this summer. But Fury's December date fell through and negotiations with Joshua continued for a summer blockbuster in Saudi Arabia. That bout was signed for by both teams but, crucially, the site deal had yet to be finalised. Saudi officials are prepared to pay £108m for the clash but Fury's team were awaiting documentation which guaranteed the funds for the fight. But all through that both Fury and Wilder's camps were taking part in a mediation over the contract from their fight. It was expected that the ruling would see the American paid a sum to step aside for the Joshua fight to happen on August 14. That was despite Fury's team feeling the contract for the third fight had expired as the initial agreement stated it had to take place by July 2020. But now judge Daniel Weinstein – who oversaw the arbitration – has ruled that a rematch must take place. The fight has to happen before September 15 unless they agree a deal on a step-aside fee. If the British heavyweight can't get out of the third fight then the undisputed clash with Joshua will be forced to wait. Fury could face Wilder this summer before facing Joshua later in the year. But that will be a huge blow to Joshua and his team who were fully focused on a summer fight with Fury. The legal teams of both fighters are still in discussions and they're expected to continue into Monday night. https://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/boxing/breaking-anthony-joshua-tyson-fury-24129234 |
