Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has said his administration is working towards recovering the £4.2million seized from a former Governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori, which was repatriated to the federal government recently.

Governor Okowa said the Delta State Government has formally written to President Muhammadu Buhari and the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the federation, Abubakar Malami, to return to funds to the state either in cash or committed into projects prescribed by the state government.

The federal government finally received the money from the United Kingdom on Tuesday, according to Malami.

However, he said the repatriated funds would be deployed into federal projects.

But Senator Okowa insisted Wednesday in Asaba, during the 2021 Quarterly Media Interaction, that the state government is committed to recovering the fund.

“We have written series of letters to President Muhammadu Buhari and Attorney General of the Federation over the matter.

“The state plans to use the money to finance some ongoing developmental projects, embark on new projects in the three senatorial districts that will be beneficial to the entire residents, create employment whereby youths and others would be proud of such opportunities,” the governor stressed.

On whether the federal government would release the money to Delta State or not, the Governor said the state had suggested some projects in the state to the federal government which it could use the money to finance.

It would be recalled that Malami signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MOU, for the repatriation of the Ibori loot on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The development, according to Malami, was a demonstration of the recognition of reputation Nigeria earns through records of management of recovered stolen money.

This is where the problem lies. Every governor after Ibori has a link with him. I think that's why the FG is taking it instead of giving it to the state

The money actually belongs to the state, but fed govt can't just hand it over to the sitting gov.

The fed govt can however spend the money for the state through a high powered committee whose membership are drawn from Delta state.

The committee can use public opinion poll to decide on which project the money should be expended.

On the final note, Igbos are foolish illiterates. undecided

If Ibori had used the money for projects and development in Delta state, what different would it have made if FG return the money back to Delta state?

But Federal high court in Delta already exonerated Ibori of corruption. According to them, Ibori is not a thief. He didn't steal any money.

So what's Okowa asking for undecided

Start by investing your own loot so that federal government can trust you.

Actually, not Delta state govt.

The criminals exonerating James ibori are the foolish lamidi cownu's ipob pigs. Reason being that the case was being addressed by Buhari's govt.

No sir. The money belongs to Delta state government/people. It wasn't looted from federal government purse but that of Delta state. Let me ask you, if this money was looted from Katsina, Kano, Kaduna or any of the northern states, and recovered, would FG claim ownership of it?

This request speaks volumes that everyone knows this country is ruled by terrible Fulani bigots.

Under normal circumstances, this would not even be necessary as it would make sense to simply invest the money in Delta state either via FG or the state government. But we live in Fulani times where they will shamelessly invest the money in Katsina or even in Niger Republic instead of giving the loot back to the people it was looted from.

it is like Britain investing Nigeria's looted money in Gibraltar rather than in projects inside Nigeria if it claims not to trust the government.

Very wrong. The money was forfeited to the British government. The British government in her magnanimity is only giving the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OF NIGERIA a part of the money upon certain conditions set out in the MoU signed between the two countries. The MoU always state clearly what FG must use the money for.

If the British government want the funds refunded to Delta state government, they would have stated so clearly in the MoU. Doing so now would amount to violation of the MoU and the British government will simply stop giving us back funds forfeited to them.
