NBC SANCTIONS HUMAN RIGHTS RADIO FOR RECURRING UNPROFESSIONAL CONDUCT

The National Broadcasting Commission met with Mr. Ahmed Isah, owner and popular host of Brekete family programmme on the Human Rights Radio on Tuesday 26th of May, 2021.

The meeting afforded Mr. Isah opportunity to explain the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident at his radio station where rather than promote human rights and human dignity a citizen who was invited to the programmme was physically assaulted by the broadcaster.

The National Broadcasting Commission has reviewed the events and notes the unreserved apologies and regrets expressed by the broadcaster.

The Commission states however that the action of the Broadcaster is in clear violations of the Broadcasting Code and a betrayal of the confidence reposed on him by the people and Government of Nigeria on whose behalf he holds the radio license in trust.

Section 0.1.1.2.1 of the Broadcasting Code provides in the Social Objectives of Broadcasting that Broadcasting shall -

. promote generally accepted social values and norms, especially civic and social responsibilities; and encourage respect for the dignity of man".

It also provides that Broadcasting organizations shall recognize that they exercise freedom of expression as agents of society, not for any personal or sectional rights, privileges and needs of their own or of their proprietors, relatives, friends or supporters.

It is important to state that the Commission has over the years, advised, cautioned, warned and fined the station over repeated cases of outright abuse, denigrating remarks, intimidation and flagrant abuse of ethics of fairness, balance and fair hearing on the station. It is also on record that the Commission had conducted several training and retraining programmes for the station and the host of the Brekete family programme especially.

The Commission has therefore in line with the sanction provisions in 15.5.2 of the Broadcasting Code, Ordered the Suspension of license of the Broadcaster, until the Broadcaster commits to ethical and professional broadcasting.

The Suspension Order is effective Monday the 31st of May 2021, at 12.00am. The Order shall last 30 days during which it is expected that the broadcaster will put its house in order and attune itself to responsive, professional and responsible broadcasting.

It shall also pay a recommencement fee of as provided for in section 15.5.1 of the Broadcasting Code at the end of the suspension period. The NBC appreciates the popularity of the station and the fact that it has in many cases tuned its programming to the yearnings of the people.

The Commission however has a sacred duty to promote decency, professionalism and respect for dignity of all citizens by all Broadcasters in Nigeria.

Detractors have successfully yanked his show off the air. It was expected with the number of toes he was stepping on and exposure of institutional fraud and injustices

moneyissweet:
Story, dude is worst than buhari.

codecoded:
since it was expected as you claimed, then why not him, try his best to be well behaved? His personality clearly, is the opposite of what his program stand for. He should go and manage his temper first, he only witched himself and no body is to blame. Behaviours like this brings bad names to the country Nigeria not just yahoo boy and drug peddlers abroad disgracing the name of the country. Try to have a balance reasoning rather than sympathetic reasoning. He is even Lucky no one has returned back one of those slap; na why body they catch am

maasoap:

Before you know it, he might stab someone someday. I don't know why you Nigerians condone abuses. What's wrong is wrong, no excuses. Hypocrites

Naijaepic:
Are you saying it is the work of his detractors that hold his hand and control it to gives slap to people in his studio?

I am aware of his programme been on air since time of Yaradua/Jonathan era.
And he has always have something against all past government.

Yes, his human rights posture had and continues to yield positive results.
But engaging in unprofessional habits should not be overlook.

Ojiofor:

Does that give him the licence to physically assault people?
He is a bully advocating as a human rights activist.

A certain Senator who assaulted an attendant in a intimacy gadget store still walks free. Most recently the head of a Federal Agency publicly beat up and still used tge police to arrest a security guard for trying to help him out and yet till date none of these persons were sanctioned or have lost their offices. The Nigerian Police have been brutalizing Nigerians for too long dat is has now become normal but yet na slap b una problem. Every one of us won't hesitate to join in the beating of a petty thief or even robbery suspect who is yet to b tried by the law Court. Infact most of us are proponents of jungle justice. I can bet any one of us would react the very same way or even worse wen faced with the same circumstances and situations he always has to deal with. I saw this coming though wen those from the govt began to sing his praises and frequent his show. I jus knew it was a matter of time before they cut him to size. He exposed a whole lot about the Maina case, exposed the forex scam in the early years of dis govt, exposed the many evils of Abba Kyari, exposed the fraud that goes on in the police pension scheme, exposed the fraud dat goes on in electricity sector with the massive scam in NBET and the list goes on and on..

Let’s forget Morals and face reality,
How disgustful can u look into a woman’s face who set a Child ablaze.
The lady was lucky she wasn’t lynched by Mob , obviously would’ve found her head on spike.

None seems to care about the burnt child, but the little tendered slap cry

Infact, I suspect this man is a wife battery. He do beat his wife in his SIL estate home......then come on air to claim a Saint.......One month suspension is too small, let him and his brekekete Akaramakala get a One year suspension so he can really put his Anger in check at the Maitama district Hospital.
