Nigeria: Unicameral or Bicameral system of governance?

At a public hearing held by the House of Representatives Special Committee on Constitution Review, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu through his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, stated that the government should consider a unicameral legislature to save money. This statement had caused quite a stir from various parties.

Nigeria practices the Bi-Cameral system of legislation which was established in 1960 for effective governance and to pass better laws. The Bi-cameral system of legislation is considered to help prevent the passage of hasty and ill-considered bills that can affect the democratic state of Nigeria.
The government considers the unicameral legislative system to be simple to maintain because it only requires funding for one chamber. Also, this system of legislation is perceived to be effective in resolving emergencies or matters arising in the country.

Conversely, the Bi-cameral system of legislation is deemed expensive to maintain as the government is required to fund two chambers. This system of legislation is also considered time-consuming as issues are delayed due to the bureaucratic process of the upper and lower chamber. Also, the Uni-cameral system of legislation can put the country at risk as hasty decisions are made on serious and complicated bills. Besides, the decision of the chamber can be easily influenced by the ruling government that has the majority in the parliament or vice versa.
