Good day sir, I was trying to ask a question earlier but network was messing up, sorry for that sir. Please what is your take on the jarah variety a dry season tomatoe from rijk zwann. I watched a video on a farmers field day, the tomatoe was actually planted on open field. 8 weeks after transplanting the fruit were still green not matured yet. But weigh 2.4 kg at that moment. I did a little test of about 100 stands of their mydas , I was impressed. |
Re: Tomato Seeds Varieties - TBRFV, Fruiting style, and Yield by Attit: 5:07pm On Oct 29, 2021 |
fiddzy: Mydas is seedless, so you dont have any trouble with it. It will flourish. I only grow seedless myself if I need to do at all. I can still use gynecious too, but I hardly do cucumber again. My focus are on exotic fruits - as in bottling and boxes of fruit juices and tomatoes. Mydas is not a bad variety. It's just that it is too expensive for farmers here. Now to Jarrah. It is a good variety I can use, but I don't use it. The way it is made, it is for all seasons. Let me explain again something. Thank you for even bringing this up. The latest bioweapon is virus Fungi and Bacteria are not the focus of scientists. What they are interested in is virus. Virus can easily be manipulated. This is why all the latest diseases are viral. Ebola too is same. The same with crops and livestocks. Ask our poultry guys and they will tell you what viral diseases can do. Ask them about Newcastle, fowlpox, Infectious Bronchitis, and Marek. These are mostly dreaded infections they run away from. They always run after vaccines. If you arent using vaccine, you better get your organic remedies on ground. And as soon as you see it falling, vaccine straight before you start managing with antibiotics which will not cure it. Thanks to my NL friend who assisted me with organic and inorganic broiler management issues recently. Rabbit farmer can testify what virus did to them about 2 years ago. They all gathered together like kids in the old story TV story lines for kids called "Tales by Moonlight" to tackle the issue. I was just laughing whenever some of them consulted me them. Lol. Virus are bast.ards Do you know that many people had Covid-19 in Nigeria? Most market women had it, but they had organic remedies for virus, but they didnt know. And they are excellent with treating fever. So, they quickly defeated it. Did you see any market woman in isolation center? Those going to isolation centers are oyinbo lifestyle people and politicians. Lol. Here is my point, virus is the next weapon. And all seeds manufacturers are presently working on this area. Well, bacteria are still there, do not get me wrong, but you can still arrest them. Don't joke with virus, and they are made in such a way that they are spread through wind. This made them deadly. Jarrah has no resistance to any bacteria that I know of. All kinds of bacteria will crush it. But the two viral diseases common in both wet and dry season, it can resist to reasonable extent. It could have qualified as one of my choices if the breeders has included the main root bacterial infection which trouble us in the southern part of Nigeria which is bacterial wilt. Please, dont get me wrong, I can work with it perfectly, but it will cost me more to assure you that bacterial wilt will not crush it. Most farmers cannot do it. I can only introduce this method to a large scale farmers. I am talking of 100 acres. Well, if I know someone who is like me, with 20 acres, the person can too. Just that it's expensive and requires medium level skill to tackle. So, I would rather avoid it if I know bacteria will crush it. So, can you manage bacterial wilt? For you to have survived till now, it means bacteria and fungi in your soil are presently on hibernation mode, or they arent present. So, I assure you that if you space your plants well, you will reap bountiful harvest cos the plants will keep getting bigger. Make sure your stakes are strong. Dont use those tiny stakes you see that they use for cobra. And make sure you remove foliar from the base as you progress upward to prolong the life of the plants. Free flow of air is good for your plants. Stake very well sir. 8 weeks only? Just 56 days. Start getting worried from 75 days. Ha ba! It's too early. You cannot compare Jarrah with Cobra. Cobra rushes out, but Jarrah and its kind gather strength first so as to give you many fruits. You mean you removed the green fruits prematurely and they weigh 2.4kg? Give me details. How many fruits do you have per plant presently? What's your spacing like? Also, heat delays tomatoes from getting ripened, but there are varieties which combats this. This is another issue you should know. But yours is still early at 8 weeks (56 days). 10 days can do the magic. That's 66 days, and you still have even another 10 more days more before you start getting worried. I think you are a bit impatient. That's it. If you have removed the fruits, hmmm... Believe me, if you had waited, it's likely the same number of fruits may hit 3.5kg cos they can still get bigger after 20 days cos they will take in more water. If you follow my instructions, be ready for a serious harvest with that Jarrah. Then, Jarrah cannot resist nematode, but that is a minor issue you can tackle easily. Their other variety cannot tolerate dry season at all. That's Gamhar, but can tolerate nematodes, it's better to go for Jarrah so that you move from dry season to rainy season with the same variety and keep it there for a long period on your farm (only if you can manage bacterial infections). |

I guess the subject here is out of reach of many here. Well, there are few who can benefit from it. Not discussing small scale issues. I can see people coming up and doing fine with small scale. Let us just reason together with the world of tomatoes. There is something you can do. If you stay Comma to Kaduna and Kano, you can sit down on your own and start 10 to 20 acres farm. Approach the two processors there. You will make huge money. But trust me, it's not cobra and platinum they will accept from you. That's the issue. But maybe they will. And they may decide to give you theirs. You will definitely pay somehow for the seeds. Ok Let's look more into factors which decide which varieties to do in the paste industry. Case Study: Morning Star Country: USA # of factories: 3 Processing Region: California, USA. ---Capacity --- Daily: 67,000 MT Yearly: 4,000,000 MT (2020) Production: 2014 - 3,900,000 MT 2018 - 3,600,000 MT 2020 - 4,000,000 MT The Morning Star Company is a Woodland, California-based agribusiness and food processing company founded in 1970. The company was originally founded as a trucking outfit by Chris Rufer, who remains the sole owner. Management & Market Summary 1. 25% of the California processing tomato production 2. Supplies approximately 40% of the U.S. industrial tomato paste and diced tomato markets. 3. It processes 1 million tonnes of tomatoes each year. 4. It has 400 employees 5. Revenues of $700 million. 6. It is the global market leader in tomato processing. Secret of it's dominance in my opinion It has a philosophy of no supervisory management, described by owner/founder, Chris Rufer, as "Self-Management." Workers are encouraged to innovate independently, define job responsibilities themselves, and even make equipment purchasing decisions in consultation with experts. Similarly, compensation is based on peer evaluations. In 2013, Morning Star was listed as one of INC Magazine's Audacious Companies. https://vimeo.com/478544804 The Morning Star Packing Company - Vertically Intergration, Quality, and Innovation. It produces 67,000MT daily. Can we do something? Let's use 22,000MT daily of my friend above with 7,000,000 MT yearly ratio to this processor and see what its outputs should be. It should produce 18,760,000 MT. Wow! But this factory in 2020 produced just 4,000,000MT. So, what is the problem? Please, take note that it even produced less in 2018 than 2016. What the heck could be wrong? And we say this is the biggest producer of paste all over the world. Wow! You know I smiled the last time my friend wrote his figures. I guess he didnt like my words. Anyway, I always say the truth. This is the biggest tomato plant in the world, and can only produce 4,000,000 MT with a huge capacity which is operating far below its efficiency. Lol. But does it really mean it is not efficient? Of course not. This plant operates in 90% and above yearly. Thanks to its management. But generally, it is operating on less than 15% of it's TRUE capacity. Lol. The analysis is gor another time. But what we are saying is that we do not need waste money and build a huge processor like this of we can see the future well. And new tech is making the way this factory operates obsolete. In fact, they are changing too. Mainly, you want to go for the obsolete they are using presently cos that's what is in available. But I am telling you that the trend is changing soon. I know cos I dived into areas which are advance. This is why you cannot see me on farms again. We are too backward. We are. But you are in hurry to quickly start cos you think first entrance matters. I am sorry ooo. Please, let us be guided. To quickly aim at super high is suicide. It is very easy to build even 100,000MT daily capacity plant, but can you run it? Multiple tomato paste product https://vimeo.com/378918837 Value Added-Product Tour Watch this video and tell me if it is just the red thick paste. Nigeria is exploding in terms of business soon. If you think we will keep going on like this, you are a joke. Listen, people are planning for tomato paste. The business is going to be huge soon. And trust Ghana, they always follow Nigeria. If you just create a yeye plant and product, you will be crushed in 10 years. I assure you. And you want to go on loan for the plant thinking you will stand there forever. Trust me, you cant be alone. Do not expand quickly. It kills business. Go steadily, and watch your competitors. The first video I showed, did you notice also that the farm they showed did not have a single stake in it? Tell me, how many growers in Nigeria can grow tomatoes without staking? Did you see mulch on the field? Start thinking. And then, the harvester went in and crush the plants. That's it. One time harvest, and that is it. Finished. Who can do this for you? What kind of variety should you use? Or you think its cobra, platinum, padma which will do this? You go for RZ Jarrah I mentioned above, and you are dead. Lol. Am I saying you cannot use RZ at all? Nope. You can, but you need another strategy. So, which do you think is ok for you? Do you think consultants should make the decision for you? This is what all owners in Nigeria want. Only one person is different. And she is TomatoJos. Respect to her. Even owners want me to be making daily decisions of their farms after they have been told I dont do it. See...people are stubborn and dead-smart. Some cannot even afford it, yet, they dream too big. Start small and gradually, nope. They want it big and they start cutting costs. Na you go injure yourself alone. And others with cash just go in big...paiiiiaaam! Wait...wait....wait... no way. Loan is counting. They must make it fast. Lol. I understand...but if you know that...let's do what works first so you can pay your loan...no...no no....its paste and this is how I am doing it. Ok ooo. No be me and you go do am, a don japa. Oh...you are a wicked man. You are wicked. I hate you. I wont talk to you again. Leave me alone. Let me be a Judas in that area. I'm ok with it. Lol. A no send you since you no even send yourself too. Oh! I want to do paste. I want to add value to the market and you are stubborn in your thoughts. Ok ooo. We will see. They ring me, talk to me, and you see lies and lies. Motives are so wrong cos they think if they tell me details, I can cheat them. Lol. What's mine? Na your wahala. Many have been crushed silently which I didnt wrote about, and I know many didnt even talk to me and were crushed too. You know about a single variety which you grew well and you think that is what you will use for life. You are in for it. Lol. Innovation is necessary. You keep doing it well. I told one guy that its outgower plan system is more important now. Now way. Na my own a wan do. Na my thing a wan build. Na me go dey there. I must see all daily. Ok. We will see. There is no tomato processor which can survive on it's own...I am saying the truth here for now in this present Nigeria. The battle has started. Who do you need? Think deeply. Paim! You started a huge factory. Salary will be the first crusher. Trust me. Listen to me. Go TomatoJos route. She knows what exactly she is doing. I love that woman. She is a template worth copying. This is a case of what a man can do, a woman can do better. I have met several women too, but I must confess they are mostly wrong, and they dont want to listen. They are crushed sooner than expected. Stop when you are told to. Do not force it. What exactly can you learn here 1. To have a high capacity factory does not necessarily mean you will be successful producing more than other. 2. Get your system right. 3. It doesnt mean you must produce all the tomatoes you need, but you must still be in charge. How? 4. When you realize #3 above is a condition you must fulfill, then, you invest heavily in research and pilots. You will try styles and varieties and get tired sef. If not, forget it. You will be crushed soon. 5. The competition is going to be tight soon. Many are going into it more than you think. Are you going to be a casualty new comers will use as a case study of what to avoid? |

Attit:Thank you for the reply sir, actually it was a farmers field day by iita, spacing was 30cm, they made use of plastic mulch. It was 42 fruits on the plant they were all green ,it was harvested immature. |

fiddzy:Post the video here if you have. How many plants in the field? Spacing btw rows Open field or under greenhouse? Exact date the tomatoes were harvested (date, month, year) Someone sent me the link of the video, and there is no way you can tell they use 30cm. Its 56days and huge like that, and it has around 70 - 80 more days to go according to my calculation based on all the guy said in the video. It plant will be huge. If you want to enjoy it, you etger space it. I do not know why you use tiny space for tomato (cos you want to have more plants?). This was how one guy was arguing seriously to the extent of using 20cm spacing drip. The false report again by the guy was that Jarrah is dry season, actually it is all round season. But I stand on my ground, cobra and the rest are tougher than it. But to make improvement on it is far easier than on cobra and the likes. Among the huge plants, it is one of the lowest ranks in my opinion cos of its diseases tolerance arent that much. Gammar is even worse. If you have challenges with thrips whiteflies and fruigflies, you may be in trouble. And if heat suddenly ly come during dry season, it will affect it. What ai do not agree with you is the 30cm spacing. Even they mentioned it in the video, the person who managed it should try bigger space and see the difference. |

150grams fruits - a blessing or a curse In my earlier threads, I moved growers from small to bigger fruits based on market value. Let's go further. Thorgal of Technisem is with bigger fruits, but it doesntproduce many fruits. If you lose many flowers, forget it, you have shortened your profit. But in the same period and you have many 70+ grams fruits, the chances of saving more flowers and having a significant number of fruits on the plant is higher. Fresh Market Dynamics If you have consistent 80gram and have 100g few to it, and they are red, you will achieve so much. One of the varieties I use gives 70g to 90g (but it doesnt mean I cannot get 110 to 120g few fruits) ,but I get up to 150 to 210 fruits consistently for the past 3 years I have been using it. No one has ever complained to get below this. This is a plant which have huge stem like a perennial plant. And I know how to push the fruits to bigger size a bit, but it's not necessarily. What is the benefit of having 150g - 170g fruits when at the end of the day, it produces less truss, and less fruits per truss? Many took my words wrongly and simply started hunting for something I that range. I read somewhere where cobra was said to have 12pgrams or so. Please, do not fall for just one fruit being weighed. The producer is right. It is below 100grams fruit. For that cobra fruit to weigh high like that, there is problem. There must be flower abortion on the plant. There are too many wrong information I read recently. Too many bad assumptions too. And people who wrote more haven't tried these varieties. Yet, they write like they know about them. Too bad. However, there are still very good guys there who give out good information. My advice is that farmers should always say the date you sow seeds, or transplant seedlings. This will help with the videos and pictures posted to really evaluate them. |

The King of Puree In my garden, you cannot see all these ones we have been mentioning here, but I have few of the best one I'm mentioning. Italians can die for this King of Puree - San Marzano. Italy banned some fake brands so they dont polute their product. Italian pasta is awesome. I usually find a good restaurant to enjoy italian pasta with puree whenever I visit Rome and Milan; though, Covid-19 has changed everything. I am glad to say that one of my friends got a buyer for all round 500 ha all through the year continuous production. I was just concerned about rainy season, but with the aid of a pilot, we sailed through. You do not need to even go into these local variety or target mile 12 and the rest to make it if you know what you are doing. Sure, exotic market is coming up. The opportunities to export is getting big again. Tomato is a big business, and SW entering the game has pushed up the price of local market. Again, thanks to Covid-19 plus you do not labor too much like cucumber. One brand worth of mentioning is Enza Zaden, but the importer is not good at all. Mehn! The guy just dey dull himself in Naija. And his prices arent competitive. Perhaps he should just move to Abuja and compete with Hazera. EZ has one hybrid of SM. I haven't tried it, but it's funny. I really do not know if he can compete with Hazera cos Israeli guys are on ground in Naija working with pros. They do not deal with regular faemers directly. They will just attach you to one of their Naija technical team member. Warning Farmers will run into problems very soon as I see virus penetrating to Nigeria soon. Why? All these unbranded seeds from China are many also. And this will be the platform to transmit diseases to Nigeria. And boom! That's it. My motive for focusing on Varieties Enough of the rubbish I read recently here. This is 2021 when other nations are going big and using tech to get the job done. I am using this opportunity to target boys and girls who can set up something nice. Listen to me, the tomato industry is beyond the rubbish play around I read here. I apologize here, but it is funny, and at the same time commendable what I want to suggest here. Please, a beg.... move drones to 100 acres plus tomato farm and let's stop this crazy demonstration farms on 1 - 6 plots. Please, let's go big a bit and encourage people. East West should lead it again since they are the leader in this area. You cannot have huge acres of most other crops, but tomatoes....you can have as much as you want. I do not discriminate, but I am tired of small scale farmers. At least, I have tried. Enough have been released to them. It is time for big players to come on board. For me, I am not in the seed business, and I do not have reasons to show farms. Rather, we keep them on low profile cos of bandits and kidnappers. Do not come here and start showing off unnecessarily. Stay safe. Let's start growing bigger than we are doing now. 20 acres can be a good start. Why not? Let's push forward. What is 2 plots, 3 plots or 1 acre? We can do better than this. The market is huge. Trust me, you will be shocked. The guide is there for you to climb the rope safely to your destination. Do not rush. Pleasez this is not the usually "how can I investment N500,000 and get bla bla bla monthly. Please, I do not do it. Set up your farm is what I am saying, and get into a good business. Go into pilots first (forget about immediate profit), but you'd pilots can even be profitable. |

Big Vs Medium Vs Small sized tomato Pur open markets favor big size more. 50% 90g - 105g 20% 106g - 120g 20% 120g - 140g 10% 60g - 79g If you can achieve the following above, you are good to go for fresh market. There are techniques you can use to achieve this. One of the methods is prunning. But it is a double edged sword. Really, growing vegetable fruits is a unique skill. Any fruits or vegetable which produces flower needs special skill. It is not just about chemicals, diseases, and then yield. I improved tremendously when I started breeding. A breeder asks himself what traits should be in the plant. Can you maintain big sized fruits I smile when I read people going for 160g type. Can you maintain it? Yes, I can maintain it, but can you? Have you ever wondered why indeterminate bigbeef is pruned? If you do not prune, many fruits will come on board, and you when all the flowers are not fed well, they abort. Also, the ones that survive arent getting enough nutrients, so the fruits are small. The Same principle applies to determinate, remember they come out all at a time. Can you feed them very well?. Salinity One case is unpruned bigbeef plant. Now, let's look at massive platinum fruits. How many flowers? What if you sre able to achieve 100 flowers. We will discuss this later. But my point here is that you are tempted to overdose your plants with fertilizer. Actually, I dont think there is anything like overdose in Nigeria. Plants are always malnourished cos farmers are stingy. They buy less fertilizers. Lol..Anyway, if you go high with nutrition, believe me that you will kill your flowers also with too much salt in the soil. Then,if you go on high nitrogen, you will achieve super many broad green leaves which is bad for your plants. How many steps of truss Indeterminate is unlimited. It makes sense that the taller the plants, the more it will yield. Right? But many things count. You dont just grow and not think. Noone taught me these things. I learned from observation. I am deep thinker, and I observe very well. This is why I do not go to the non organized farms. Your farm must be fully set with modern stuff before I visit. I can just guide you if yours isnt modern. Believe me, if you are smart, you will make it. You see, in the olden days, the distance between steps of trusses in tomatoes and pepper are huge. But now, breeders are getting it slimmer. Maybe the golden days variety can have like just 4 trusses in a 2m tall plants. Now, we have more. The video of Jarrah I watched above has around 8 trusses and it's just 9 weeks after transplant. And since it is not determinate it is growing taller. Now the beauty part of it is that the grower was able to get 6 fruits per truss. Good. But from that video, I know it can give 8 fruits.. meaning the grower lost 2 fruits per truss..wow! Now imagine you have 100,000 plants at that stage, do you know the number of fruits you are losing? That's huge. So, how many fruits can you get per truss is very important. Abuse and too much of chemicals kill plants. This is one of the reasons I discourage growers from abusing chemicals. Paimmmm! They spray everything, anything and every other damn ingredients. Wow! No! This is not how to grow. Grow with your sense. There is a period to have leaves and then, the time to not have. If you can grow rainy season well, you will have higher yield than dry season. So, I disagree with the guy Clement guy in the RZ video I watched who said Jarrah will produce well at dry season. It's actually gor both seasons. Rainy season- diseases and flood stress Dry season - heat stress and flies. The two seasons have their own wahala, though that of rainy season is damn hard. But under heat, you are really in soup. Let's say its shanty you go for. With 120 to 150g fruits, and the ability to have up to 12 or more trusses. Let's use 7 fruits per truss...that's potential of 84 fruits (which i know is more). That's 10.9kg per plant. But the grower gives 80tons to 120 tons per ha with 15,000 plants. Meaning that the grower expects you to save 44 fruits at the lower 120g to achieve 80 tons. But many underfed and they dont manage well. They still have less than 100g of shanty. Mainwhilex shanty grows huge fruits. I even watched one Amiran video where they gave 30cm for shanty. I just smile. Anyway, its 40cm and better to use 50cm if you.are good. The 30cm is to quickly have many fruits cos the grower is not good. Now, imagine you grow cobra, you need to study it too. How can I push it to 3g, 4g per plant. I really believe it may be possible if you are determined. Whem growing in soul, your nutritional formulation changes. Of course, even you have A to Z from me, I can change it at anytime depending on the performance of your plants. Yes, you may reduce yield drastically if you continue with what I thought was the best. Tomato management is dynamixc for optimum production. I think as a small farmer, you should invest more in those bigger plants. The only wahala is that they are mostly not resistant to bacterial wilt. And make sure your stakes are strong. You may be tempted to ask me the procedure of maintaining them from A to Z. I cannot tell you cos I need to see. It's all about skills. It is very hard to teach, otherwise, I would have just dropped the procedure here. But some special sprays and microbes are what I use. It depends on the variety. I am writing these things so you can improve yours too. Yes you can. If I decide to pilot you, I always study the characteristics of your varieties. I like working with proactive people. You ask them questions, they give you complete and fast answers. Chemical rotation is vital. At times, I dont even use Mancozeb, and I still always buy it. This is to tell you that I always buy many kinds. I rotate so well. Also, some of these bio sprays sold have steroids or stimulants which may not be ok for my plants. Even seaweeds and some other sprays have spraying rules. People just spray anyhow. The greatest harm of chemical is chasing away pollinators. Wow! Some farms have been damaged with previous chemical abuse and then we put tomatoes there and we start having issues. I had one challenge like that one time and the man had a terrible first attempt. He was calm. I had to first stabilize the ecosystem of the farm. So, it is not really about big fruits alone. I have learned people want cheap stuff. So, if you dont mind, go for cobra, platinum, diva, padma, and the rest in this category. I know there are many more coming out. If you do not mind having many plants, it's ok. Go for this group also if you do not want to trouble yourself with heavy staking, settle for this. But you will worker harder and labor more to get this done. Also, you will spend more money on fertilizer and water. But really vegetable and fruits quantity of fertilizer is calculated by the number of fruits on the plants. So, you are suppose to use the same amount of fertilizer for the same ton produced on the farm either by small plants or huge plants. But since I know that the efficiency of farmers is low, the tendency to spend more with many plants is higher. |

spend a little time and talk about the local heir loom seeds with respect to locations in the sw..i know yield is poor but permit my indulgence |
Re: Tomato Seeds Varieties - TBRFV, Fruiting style, and Yield by Attit: 6:29am On Nov 02, 2021 |
betabread: Let's use the term open pollinated instead of heirloom. I grew them and I had a reasonable success. They are harder to grew now. Just like the heirlooms are so hard to grow in the western world too. These varieites were like the hybrid of the olden days like say 70s to early 90s. With the arrival of bioweapons, they have been crushed. Non of them have resistance to any viral disease. You should go and check well. In the olden days, diseases are mainly spread via soil. That's it. But now, sceintistic arent interested only in soil. They want it stored in the soil and then even spread more via wind. It is just an unfortunate situation we have found ourselves. OK, I may recommend you try them during dry season. Do not even near them when its rainy. Of course, the old abokis will not buy even cobra. They go for these kinds (very cheap) and they have some reasonable successes, but many of them are beginning to go into the likes of cobra. Of course, they dont near seeds sold per count. If you notice RZ is based in SW. Lol. Technisem head is in Kano and another strong office in Ibadan. East West is in Kaduna, The main reason I dropped was the market. All of the open pollinated do not have thick skin unlike the new breeds. Have you ever held one shanty? Hold one Newton and you will understand. Maybe you cut Jarrah into two and see. They always have very little water inside and the skin wall is so thick. This is why I stopped working on the open pollinated since the market is almost dead. You wont even sell at all. Why would you even want to m try bring them out in the rainy season? Well, the real heirlooms are the ones that are so soft and watery. They always come out when open pollinated from the north is crushed in the rainy season. But why would you want to do that when you can easily buy padma or cobra? I can give tips on how to get it done, but I do not want to do it in this thread. My focus is big growers. And you guys shouldn't see yourselves small. People can invest in you. But the truth is that if you grow just one plot successfully and hit 80 to 120 crates, that's like N800k. Come on! Why would you want to work for an investor who does not know how it works o farm, and can even destroy the farm cos all the fellow is interested is fast money. But if you want to have them at home, you can. When I got some seeds from the US which are heirlooms, my interestes in those seeds Nigerian OPV crashed. But I am glad I worked with them because they helped me to achieve better yield with the ones I got. Green zebra, Cherokee Purple, Brandywine, to mention few, and cherries. If you do one plot of open pollinated, you may not harvest one crate during rainy season. And why should you compete with the hausas and get crushed during dry season? For what? If you are doing paste and you want to try, why not? You can try the pilot, and see. It may not just make sense anymore. Why? Their brix level (seeetness) is low. Modern varieties compete for high brix level. This is a factor in making good causes ketchup or taste. You don't want to bombard your paste with artificial sweeteners cos you will get crushed soon as your competitors will soon upgrade. The days of Chinese low quality food and products in Nigeria is coming to an end. Let's just get power right. We will stop importing rubbish from China. And I trust Nigerians, they produce quality. Greedy importers are the ones killing us. And when we push out these Indians and Chinese who are disgusting we will get quality again. So, why not prepare for this instead of trying to get a "jam jam" thing. Sorry my brother that I had to move into big sclea again. Cos this is my focus. I want you all to start thinking big. Bro and everyone reading, we are in a new era of doing business. Covid-19 has redefined everything. If you do not move fast and catch up with what is happening now, you will lose out soon. 1 million naira is nothing again oooo. The more people look for cheaper means, the more you stay in poverty ooo (bro, I am not talking to you here). Come on! Only you cannot do 10,000 plants on an acres. Ok. You can manage 1,000 plants. What stops you from clawing your eyes and pay for 1,000 seeds at even N30,000 or N50,000? If I say this will give you 15kg to 20kg, you better believe it. Just invest in a very strong stake. Take your time, and devote 8 solid months. You are bouncing out in success. So, why would you want to pay workers to clear 1 acre, spend high, and then achieve 8% yield at the end of the day when you can manage just 1 plot yourself and make it huge. Really, I do not understand. If I dont spend, I cant know what I know today. As in,I spend. Imagine buying N50,000 seeds and then use just 100 seeds out of the pack. That's it. I invest in many things. Do it well, and use WhatsApp status to show skill, and tell me if you will be the same the following year. Use your facebook to show your skill. Or even bring it down here on NL, and see if the following year will not change. |

Start up cost for small farms Someone asked me to assist again with proper start up cost for a small farm. Honestly, it is hard to for me to do. I do not want to do this again since I know my standard is high, and many here run away. But the truth is that what I read here are craps. Do not get me wrong, there are quality stuff if you scrutinize, but hmmmm.... For example, good farmers know a particular (very popular) agro chemical company which needs to be shut down. And these are the useless products farmers run after. The products they sell arent good. They first make them good, and then, they later reduced the quality without making them known to buyers. And many run after these products simply cos they are cheap. There are 100ml content from other brands that can cost over N10k, while 500ml from that place costs N3k. Since you cannot differentiate it, you go for the cheap one. Meanwhile, when told to buy the other, you dont listen. First let me talk about sales. Let's use the usual 1 acre drip sold. To me, this standard is wrong as the requirements needed depend on the style of farming and the crop. Most use 4,000m drip roll. For this, I will certainly use 8 plots. Meaning if you are using exactly 1 acre, you need less. Seeds requirement: You calculate based on your drip. You can use 30cm, 40cm, 50cm. I go as far as 80cm or even 1m for some of my varieties. Anyway, for the usual 30cm and 40cm, cobra, platinum, padma, and the rest in their category. If using 30cm, you need about 13,333 seeds, but you need to get extra. They tell you to get 10% extra, but if your seeds are viable, no need. 3 -5% could be used. A can of cobra is the cheapest which gives around 15,000 seeds. If you buy directly from the seller, it's around N23K of N24K presently. But can go as high as N27k to N30k from resellers. Meanwhile, per approx 3,000 seeds of Padma, Platinum can be around N6k to N11k. Then, you need about 10,100 - 10,500 viable seeds for 40cm emitters. And 8,100 - 8,500 for 50cm emitters. Now using robust seeds, you need to budget N7 to N11k per seed for most. When you buy Jarrah at N10,000 - N11,500, for 1k seeds, then calculate the cost of one. Oh Yeah! Now you know the reason people run away. Lol. But this should not be so. You dont run away from good seeds. I am not promoting Jarrah at all, infact, it doesnt have resistant to all bacterial infections I know. And if you get any of these diseases, you are a loser. What if you decide to go for Shanty of Galileo of Hazera. That's N28 to N31 per seed. Calculate how much you need. Let me use shanty, 50cm spacing, 9,000 seeds. That's N234,000 for Shanty. Meanwhile, you spend N23,000 for cobra, and you have excess remaining. Is it worth it? Believe me! It is if you know what you are doing. And we can still even get some cheaper seeds which can resist more and more. Shanty has been around for more than 7 years, while there are those who came out 2 years ago with improved versions. Even, there are 2021 improved versions. But I cannot give info about these cos they arent on the shelves here. You should go for what is there. Again, if you cannot know how to handle some issues like bacterial wilt, your shanty will be crushed, while youe cheap cobra will do well. And is using cobra of N23k ok? It depends on you. Do what you know you want to do. It is hard telling you what to do. The condition of the farm and your financial state should tell you what to do. It is just easier to work with a big farm as we can just get huge seeds of like 3 million seeds at once and cut down the prices. I have moved in up to 30 million seeds in a batch a couple of times. But working with small farmers and trying to convince them on going for quality is what I do not want to engage in again. If roma is what works for you, do it well. So using 50cm drip. And I believe choosing a seed which can give 8 -10kg (though, no one will say this, but you make your investigation well...pilots help), you should get at least 4kg on 80% of the the whole plants. You should have 25tons minimum. This is like me being realistic here. Sales: N12m if you set it at the second quarter of the year. If you ask me what I will achieve? Lol. This will cover 7.5 to 8 plots (more than 1 acre), and I will definitely achieve 40tons and above cos I go.for the best. As in spend heavily. My sales target is N20million and above. So, I will definitely spend nothing less than N5million on the total cost of production. Can you do it? And by the following year, my expenses will be pushed down seriously cos I wont buy mulch, drip, pumps, etc again. And I farm just once in 2 years or 3 years now. Why? I have so many engagements that to go to farm is hard. And I need super internet connectivity every time which I cannot get on farm. My only prayer at this time is that Space Internet comes to Nigeria. I swear, I do not mind to buy 1,000 acres for fresh vegetables and build a house there with security, and live permanently. This is the only reason I cannot farm continuously. Too bad! Drip and its accessories are from N250k to N400k. And you have to buy some other plumbing materials. You can just add 10%. I hope that its enough. Then, your choice of wafer pump depending on the kind of water reservoir you have. Also, will you be using generator? Fuel or diesel and what is the capacity. How old is your power system? Covering 4,000m mulch can cost you around N600,000 for very thin ones which do not last long, but I gat a guy who recently told me about something good which is ok around in Nigeria. This is fine. I think N350k will get this. Not bad. But if you are like me, then, super kind that will last for even 10 years if you use yearly I can use on a small piece of land like up to 10 acres. Wow! Then, this is huge, and can run to 1 million for the calculation we are doing. Most people will definitely choose rhe cheapest. Though, I think the N350k option isnt bad at all, but do you want it last longer and even give you 0.5kg to 1kg extra yield for every 5 plants? As for foliar sprays, good brands are expensive. This is what I need you to know. There are even some in powder form which are tiny pieces, but are super expensive. Chemicals, fertilizers, nutrients for NPK and micro, immune builders, etc. Many things to consider. Plants are under cold, heat, dry wind? Every kind of climatic condition requires different maintenance. And this is what many do not know. This is how I always push my yield to optimum. Fine, yours is to just get NPK, Lime, etc and dump. I am glad many are using DAP, SSP etc. Of course, I understand my previous articles have redefined many things as sellers read them. For this, I am grateful to God. And that God has used me this way to make changes in Nigeria, I am so grateful and thankful. This way, I give back to the society. So, at low budget, I expect you to spend around N100k max, some even will spend N10k to N20k. But if you are really going to hit it big, you may spend close to N300k or more. There are some things you cannot even get at all in Nigeria. So, people with strict budgets cannot work with me. You are on your own. Sorry. Soil nutrients are ok. But the choice of what to use is hard. I always use special microbes I formulate based on special scientific procedure. I have tried to do low budget and the result was not good. If I don't do it, then guess work has started which I dont do. But a farmer who doesnt understand this doesnt need to do it. Many battle fusarium and other diseases which could be really prevented or managed. How you treat your manure is vital. Many rush it. Even to get manure is a big issue for many, and they start managing it. Many even delay it for long. These are issues that should be addressed. If you cannot keep to schedule, do not go into it. Dont try it. When you start missing deadlines, things start going wrong. Missing deadlines reduce yield. For this template, I recommend 8, 10, 13.3 tons if using 50cm, 40cm, 30cm respectively. How many of you actually use up to this? Can you even source for it? The manure should be dry. Do the calculation if you are buying. But there should be ways to reduce the cost. Staking is a must if you want to hit it big. How do you go about it? You need to get the cost also. I cannot give you this. Salary or casual workers pay should be standby. This one reason is why I do not talk to small farmers. If I work on farm or I give you waht to do, just know that your workers will complain cos they are used to doing rubbish work. How many workers will enter bush and cut bamboos and be happy with you after? But then, you will spend more buying. What do you do? How many will smile at you after packing manure? You are looking for trouble if you dont know what to do after. Yet, many small farm owners tried to push blame at me like 6 years ago when I was still attending to many of them. You made them do what they arent used to, and you didn't and still dont m know what to do to motivate them, and you blamed me when they start messing up your farm. The person is not OKAY at all. So, I quit talking to these people. Managing big farms where machines are available and workers take far more than minimum wage, and they beg to work on the farm is ok for me to work with. I hope you are following me. And then, sacking workers that start stealing is easy on big farms while small farms continue to manage crazy workers. How do you expect to make it? Those making it on NL manage their farms themselves. Some of them are even their own labor, amd they get help only when needed. Lol. Cant you see? If you cannot manage your farm yourself, you are the joke if you do not know how to motivate your workers. That is on you and not on anyone else. And since I know many small owners are fault pushers to others, there is no point to even work with them anymore. But I look for team players everytime. If you are busy, find a trust worthy person. To get a trust worthy person is hard, and they can come anytime. So, get all your materials ready first. You can spend 4 months to source for these items (perhaps you import them yourself). Also, you may need to buy from sellers here and not wait till you are ready to sow seeds. If you find yourself in a situation a particular item is not available and you have to manage, it is your fault and no one else. Do not go for loan for a small scale farm. Use your money so you do not start rushing it cos of the interest you have to pay. Or go for annual interest, and take your time. Don't go for weekly or monthly interests oooo. I think I have mentioned the basic things necessary here. If you are on the farm and you are the farmer, you can easily do things like what you read on NL. But if you arent on farm, you better use your head and do what is right. 1. Get quality you can use and reuse so that even you fail the first year, you go again the following year. Learn from the mistake of the first. 2. Always rest. Do not injure yourself. 3. Go for big yield, make it one time, and move out to return and make more. More points & Recap 1. If you have resources, install cameras and monitor everything. Let the person you have on your farm know this. If possible, get real time ones. The challenge is always online connectivity. Ooops! I think, mor options are available. You can make investigation on this 2. Invest heavily on soil ammendment. People do not knkw about it. All they do is just do "sharp sharp" job. 3. Invest heavily on foliar sprays for high yield 4. Invest heavily on drip and mulch. Very important. 5. Make your supervisor or your manager your right hand man. He determines your success or failure. Make sure that he is a good person who is dependable. You are the one solely responsible for this. If you don't get it right, you are in a big problem. 6. You do not have time cos you are busy; yet, you want to buy inferior quality, so you buy everytime. How is this efficient? 7. The choice of making 0.5kg per plant and have 13,000 plants on an acre is before you. It is fine and good. Though, you can make 2kg per plant and shoot it to 26tons per acre instead of 7.5tons. But can you really manage it? Can the person you put in charge manage it? Can you really pay for 13plants side dressing fertilization, staking, and pruning if needed? Can you easily maintain free air flow? Can you really manage it well? The choice is yours to make. 8. Looking at 8 above, the choice of having your equipment now and no need to buy in the next 10 years is before you in comparison to buying now and buy again next time. If you do not make it now, are you sure you can be motivated to buy again next year? The choice is yours to make. I tell people, if you do not have the money, do not do it. I have even tried to assist people in the past to manage their resources, but I have realised it is a gesture which turns evil everytime, and I dont need to never get involved again. So, if you want to make N12million to N20million sales using an acre drip (Nigerians sellers standard) on 9 plots of land, dont you think it's worth investing 5 million naira the first while your cost drops drastically the following years? I am sure after the first round, you can make even better decisions on how to reduce your cost of production much more even you want to expand or set up in new places. Sure, you can. And if you see the potential in the farm is huge, it can motivate you to take vacation and go for bigger land and hit it bigger. But please, I am talking more about quality and big farms more in this thread. Also, keep in mind that the main motive here is to make you decide better which variety you should go for. You dont buy N10 per seed and just use any damn cheap stuff out there to grow them. |

How diseases change how we farm and what to do Roma came out when tomato paste business started. And then, the first set were made to resist Verticillium and Fusarium. Then, Nematodes started disturbing them and the next generation resisted the three diseases. You can imagine how long these three diseases have been around. However, there are now different strains. So, when you are told your variety can resist them, most of the time, it may just be a strain. What about the others? This is why you cannot make high yield. There was huge success with Roma until the wickedness of the wicked came out again to make money, and they push out Bacteria Wilt. OMG! This one was so serious that it destroyed almost everything. Bacterial Wilt till date is deadly and cannot be easily controlled. The only way to control it is by a variety in those days. And they successfully dumped roma and its friends. This is when bacteria wilt revisited varieties were common. The only issue is that combining bacteria wilt tolerates variety and achieving big fruits with high yield used to be hard. But some people are doing it now; however, the focus is no more on bacterial wilt anymore. And this is why most expensive seeds do not have resistance to it. Yet, it is deadly. There are solutions available. And since the spread can be limited, producers did not work further on using it to cause more havoc. Then, Virus took over. But funny, Nigerian seeds sellers always tell you to use TMV for wet season. Lol. Is it only this you csn get? No, not of course. There are many more. Early & ,Late Blight too. There are modern virus like TSWV which is deadly in the US. I think it may enter Naija also soon. Then, TBRFV is presently doing serious damage in some countries. These are spread by wind. Producers have stopped producing the kind spread by small insects cos they know you can easily use pesticides,.and this is why any peat related disease resistant are always said you can use in dry season. Microbes formulation and combination of another variety to the one yoy want to plant are used to manage soil diseases. This is a permanent solution scientists who are farmers friends got. And then those who make these diseases also dont want to use soil to spread diseases again because it wont spread fast. If they use pests to spread them, you will wipe of the pests. So, the one thing you cannot arrest is wind. Viola! You will abandon your farm if you abuse chemical usage. Using manure goes a long way in helping you. However when on big farm, it may not be possible. So, you just have to use advance technique. It makes sense to use chemical to address wind and pest related infections. Why would you want to use chemicals to kill infections in the soil? Does it make sense? So, prepare your soil very well sp you can eradicate anything called soil pathogens in tomatoes. This is your surest way of moving ahead. Everyone has got his own method, you should try to develop yours. There is a high chance your variety will produce 8kg and more if you have less soil diseases it resists from my present observation. And the chance that your fruits will be big is very high. Listen to me, if you catch Verticillium or Fusarium or nematodes affect your plants, and your seller tells you that it resists any out of this 3, it's a big lie in my opinion. And I will start suspecting the authenticity of the other diseases it can resist. It is easy to make high resistance for these 3, and there are even other ways to arrest them if you are good. So, it doesn't make sense to focus on them. I have decided to go to farm again and what I am using is on the way. You also should start sourcing for you. My target per plant is 15kg to 21kg per plant which will be on the open field and i will harvest for good 4-5 months. Also, average fruit weight will be 90g to 110g. What I am using have the ability of producing 45 truss as it come with 3-4 basic stems which develop into big plants. Meaning that one plant is like 3-4 plants. It doesn't have many soil resistant attributes, but it can resist pretty quite deadly virus which are hard to control. My drip are fine and I have mulch on standby. However, I am going into hydroponics too along with this. Have you seen 190 to 210 tons per ha? If you are good with tomatoes and tou want to prove me wrong, when they arrive, I can share with you as long as you are able to show me you are good with tomatoes. You can prove me wrong or right with a few seeds. Right? After doing this, you may start going for 8kg and above. |
Re: Tomato Seeds Varieties - TBRFV, Fruiting style, and Yield by Attit: 3:39am On Nov 04, 2021 |
If you are going to mange 15kg to 21kg of tomato per plant you arent going to handle it the way you handle 2kg per plant. That's like handling 10 in 1. It will not produce all the fruits in 3 weeks like your usual 2kg fruits. Nope. It will produce over 4 to 5 months. But if you are in hurry, you may buy 8kg and get 3 to 4kg and go on tighter spacing. Just know you are spending more on farming input. These are factors Famers dont know. They really do not try to understand varieites. Do your calculation very well. Open market prices for tomato in the past two years has really increased. The choice is yours to make. I wish everyone the best. So, I want to keep this short, and I think I have covered the basics. Ooops! I dont know I would have time to really do this but I have done it based on the special requests. May not be online for some time again, kindly drop email if you need to contact me via NL. Go to my profile and press "Send Email Message to Attit". Will be online sparingly, if I see any message, I will reply here too, but may take time. Goodluck to everyone. 1 Like |

Is there any justification for Hazera to sell a seed at N30 and Technisem sells at N1.6? Someone asked me what justifies why Hazera and RZ sell at N30 and N9.5 respectively per seed, while Technisem and East West sell at N1.6 and N3.2 respectively. I really do not know if this thread is really educative to someone here, or most readers are just concerned with growing on open field techniques. Personally, I ask breeders questions. I remember when I wanted to first try Hazera, they had to send my questions to Israel cos they couldn't answer me here as they do not know what to tell me. And I had 1 good hour conversation with a top Hazera Jewish breeder who explained many things. At the end of the day, he said he can actually have me come on board as their member. But my interest is really not in becoming a scientist, but an influencer in Africa. Nigeria forced me to go deep into these things. Most people who go deep like me are in the western world universities laboratories as professors. It used to be hard to get materials, but recently with most Ivy Leagues courses offered online has created an extremely easy path for me to really learn. So, you cannot find me on farm wasting my time. For the past 2.5 years, I have been improving myself. I am just interested in Africa. My love for Nigeria is so huge. Its unexplainable. The question why some seeds are expensive is very hard to explain in a plain language. I know Hazera too produces in Thailand as EastWest, but why are their seeds so expensive? And truly speaking, generally, EastWest is rated higher than Hazera many times by world seed. Seeds affordability is also part of the criteria used. It's the whole company plus integrity and a whole lot of many things are considered, but we are talking about specific seeds here. The top 10 best seed company in 2020 or 21 should never be a criterion to choose. Never. Nigerians destroy opportunities Nigerians themselves are their own enemies. I know the number of times consultants have attacked me; yet, they know zero. I am a farmer to the core, and it's why I know what I know. But it's just inefficient working with people with the mind set of stealing. There is a difference how a manager who is after profit operates to the one after optimum result. You see managers for profit also do "sharp sharp" jobs. But the one who wants optimum cos he is doing a test run makes sure everything is perfect. How do I get a manager who can do this when everyone wants to go there and do "sharp sharp" thing. But if you work with a farmer from these Asain nations, hmmmm. You sef will be forced to say they are very patient. It is just their way of life. They are so patient with their plants. Those Thai farmers are just too patient. And this is why these companies use them, more so, labor is cheap. They are just small farmers like Nigerians, but what's the difference, they always deliver quality cos they are patient. And when they make mistakes, they dont try to play "smart". A Naija farmer will want to outplay you everytime. To them, it is not fraud, but being smart to make more money. Show a Naija man the way to do something and get optimum result, and how to detect those you want which are 98% accurate. Naija man will return and use less quality and they dont care, they just bring you all and tell you they used the procedure you gave them. Maybe they do not realise you have a way to check. Theirs is that seeds are seeds. But you know how to check. So, how long will you continue wasting your precious time and resources checking many seeds to see that only 0.05% meet your standard? The time you used in checking is enough to produce 10% of what the person brought, main while, you got just 0.05% deon the nasty farmer. Is this efficient? The response of some here is strange. I gave some young dudes some tasks and if you see how they were grumbling and complaining. It's their farm, and I only assisted them, but maybe cos they felt their money isnt in it they can be demanding. I just shut them down. Another set used their money and were complaining how hard it was to enter their farm. I told asked them again didnt they say their farm is close to the road? So, I that told them to find a farm close to the road didnt understand myself? There are some who will even want to use fulani herdsmen as excuse in vegetable farms. I dont know where cattles start entering vegetable farms when you arent producing grains, and it's an acre or less most do. Let's be honest with ourselves here. Quite a few producers could have employed Nigerian small farmers to produce their seeds here. And that's good source of income. Yet, we complain. This part that seeds arent produced locally is easy to explain, but the way the seeds are made can be really tedious. Hazera doesnt make huge volume like technisem. Why? But really, they make huge volume maybe more than technisem if you really care to know. So, why do they sell very small number of seeds at the end of the day? Or may, it's just their initial production that is extremely high. Well, I am not sure how to explain this in lame man's language. But I know if you understand this process, then, you will appreciate why we go for quality and not quantity. Education changes your perspective. Ordinarily, you will want to drive Toyota Corolla all your life. But if you understand what Audi packed in its, you may have a change of heart when you have the money. I mean, not just for showing off, but you will know what you are paying money for. It's like the tech guys or 3d designers. They really understand the concept of computer, so they go for the best cos they know the worth. To you who doesnt, you keep wondering why they waste money to upgrade everytime when you can just do everything you need with your "jam jam" phone. The issue may be that you do not know you can do better with something better cos you just dont know. Simple. So, you do not know you can do much with some seeds or how to do it cos you dont know anything about the seeds. You just know they are called hybrid seeds. Hybrid na hybrid to you. F1 is this ....tat, tat, tat, and tat. You cross two plants. Simple. That's all you know. Lol. We dont use F2 cos tot, tot, tot, and tot. Lol. You are a joke if you think this is still how seeds are produced. You are still in 1920s era. That's like a century backward. That's how backward you are. 100 years behind. I swear. I will think of a way to simplify it and explain here, but I dont know if anyone is interested. If I get 10 requests, I may consider doing it here. If not, it means most are solely interested in just buying seeds and just looking at "abrakatabra" from growers field days. Yes, it is field days where they pull out green Jarrah fruits and you counted fruits on a plant is what you want to see again to decide which to go for.. Yeah, it's good. You know that's a way to convince illiterates. Oc course, a literate has a more scientific and faster technique to check. You do not need the bull crap field day to know what any seed can do if you understand the concept. You just know it yourself from info breeders give. And most times, you cant get such answers from Nigeria. That's it. Well, 10 requests, and I will see how to explain it in lame man's language. This was a special request request, and I need to check how many arr interested to know. 1 Like |

what are hazera variety answers to the following problems in the south west.............. 1.) heavy rainfall(corresponds with season of high prices) 2.)High Temprature( Average temprature when tomato prices are High is 30 daytime and 29 Night time) I have seen a friend grow tomato with successfuly but unprofittably on his pilot plot with a pletora chemicals at times I wonder if the tomatoes were suffering from AIDS, he never uses the same chemical twice................... Add staking to that and one is tempted to ask "Do i Have to go through all this to make money"................................... Please tell us how Hazera is coming in to help Farmers...... betabread:Sir, I am not here to promote Hazera. My aim is to just show everyone the future of seeds. I am trying hard to carry along both small scales and big farms owners. Sir, rather than ask about Hazera, why not what are our Agricultural professors doing? Have you ever heard of a single variety made in Nigeria? Yes some of them are trying to make impact in grains, but do you know that funds come from overseas? But that of vegetable is zero. They arent doing much. Also, you mentioned South West. Do you think I would target south West first if I was Hazera or EastWest? No. North straight. Hazera no send you at all. Rather, they deal with big northern farmers. Advocating for South West is great, but do many appreciate it? If not for the north, do you think Technisem and EastWest will stay? Hope you get my point sir? These companies are here to make money, and they will go to where money is. You and I in the south should build south so they can come here. And this is why I keep writing. Many think it's about money. How much do I make from my articles or for guiding people? No, it's the passion. The potentials in vegetables are too much that I am committed to the cause. It is an industry that can create wealth and jobs. So, if we really need to do something for SW, SS, and SE, then, we must be serious so as to attract these companies. Also, our professors should carry more researches and approach these companies for funds. What stops guys from forming cluster farming. Joint purchase to reduce the cost, and go for the best. This is called Abiotic Stress. And this is the new research focus. Tolerance for drought, heat, and cold. Also, salinity is part of it too. I will explain more later, but I may dive into discussing 2021 breakthroughs. Are people really interested into this? I dont know cos what I see here is that they want someone to show them what to copy on their farms. This is what everyone is looking for here. Show us pictures and videos so we can believe you, and then what? Rank Xerox. So, the concept is what you should know. Then, you will be able to choose well. When you understand gbe concept, you can manage your plants well. Bro, I can manipulate most varieties and make all the plants stand in 48 hours flood and survive. Yes, I can do it. But it takes an extra effort. There are some varieties also which can resist flood a bit. When it comes to heat stress, I know how to manage tomato plants to reduce flower abortion. The reason many dont get high yield is cos of flowers abortion in determinate varieties. You know that determinates bring out many flowers at same time, that is the time Famers lose 80 - 99% flowers. How can they get high yield? There are techniques to manage hesf stress, but it depends on the varieties. I can tell you that heat stress varieties are many. I know Shanty tolerates heat. Even cobra can too. Are you sure you have recorded 29C night when day is 30C? I am curious. 30C day is even low. See, the funny thing is that in SW you need a variety which can tolerate rain and heat. Even in June/July we experience 37C day. . The rain can be so crazy in May that it damages tomato farms, but come July, the heat returns around 1st week of July. And then continues till end of September. But there might be heavy rainfall or no rain during this period. So, can you see that our case is special? What variety did he use? He did not choose the right one, and he didnt feed them well. What you described is management problem. And that kind of farmer will keep arguing. Bro, if you want to produce tomatoes during rainy season, you must spend well. If not, you wont make it. It is as simple as ABC. Please, what is special about Plethora? Maybe you let me know. Concerning staking...I just laughed. Seriously you are right. But your perspective will change if you do it the right way. When you harvest for good solid 4 months (if you arent good, you will do 2 months), then no one will teach that you need to stake. There was a time, I harvest 6 good months on open field. Yes, not joking. But when you put determinate there that gives you scanty leaves, and then succumb to diseases, , you get discouraged. But it is hard to be convinced what to do cos the cost is not low. Can you buy a seed worth of N15k to N30K? If you can, then, if I give you something, come back here and say its rubbish I give you. Yes, I willl be waiting. But the thing is that, your friend will not want to try such variety? Why? You all do not understand the concept of manufacturing these seeds. What is unique about them? And why are they expensive? This is the big challenge. But it's the N1.3 per seed most keep using, and they keep nagging everytime. Like you also said, "me ....kon do 13,000 plants on 1 acre and about 43,000 on 1 ha? Then stake it, and starts seeing HIV plants.... ...Never bro. Never. I do not have the strength to do so many plants. The wahala to even transplant them is enough. Then, to side dress? Not to talk of basal holes one will make and the amount of manure. A beg....count me out. I will rather channel the money into buying better seeds with lower population rate on 1 ha. I dont give a damn how expensive it is cos it is cheaper at the long run. Make a kon kill myself attending to many plants that will gove me 0.4kg to max of 2 kg per plant, when I can have robust plants of 10,000 to 15,000 plants pn tje same 1 ha another farmer puts 45,000 plant. Lol. No way. We are doing rainy season farming....abeg. sure, I am in to put 45,000 plants if we will use non staking type and no side dressing. But to stake those tiny ones and then bank on extreme high plant population to hit high yield? A beg...no be me too. You should get 100 crates minimum on 1 plot of land. If you go my route, you can hit up to 200 crates or more. Yes, I know cos it's what I have done many times. |
Re: Tomato Seeds Varieties - TBRFV, Fruiting style, and Yield by Attit: 5:32am On Nov 09, 2021 |
Milestone in Plant Breeding Crop domestication started a long time ago. Farmers select the best wild species to develop crops. Do you know that the first set of tomatoes weren't red? Also, the first set of watermelons weren't red inside. Do you knkw there are green riped, black, brown, orange, pink, purple etc tomatoes? Red tomato was strange to rhe first people who ate them, but are normal now. Lol. It's all a out DNA. Note that I have strong believe this present GMOs should be banned. And I have written about it. But what next? Let us read on. In 10,000 BC, wheat was domesticated. And during this time, farmers started using bulls to plough their farms. I guess some farmers in the north still use bulls to plough their land. Why is Africa so backward? In early days after seeds domestication, George Mendel ddescribed the inheritance of traits from one generation to the next - Mendel's law. His law became the core of classical genetics. And this gave birth to Plant breeding based on cross breeding. Development of improved varieties by combining good characteristics from two parents came into play. This was the birth of hybrid breeding - crossing two genetically different individuals to develop better performing hybrids. In 1926 more vigorous hybrid corn was made. Mutagenesis breeding started. New genetic diversity was developed by exposing crop plants to chemical agents or radiation. They started seeing the effect. This is the start of chemicals. What a blessing and curse!!! I think the first people benefitted from it, but we are the ones suffering it cos we have created too many artificial and chemical products which have destroyed our ecosystem. Then, I think the next generations after us will benefit cos there will be a balance soon when scientists understand everything well. And presently, it seems, science is getting it. Yes, they are presently in the right direction of using DNAs accurately and safely for breeding. But presently, I wont be a Guinea pig for the next generation to benefit from. Let me enjoy my life and grow old. If they eventually perfected aging reversing, we will go for it. We will live beuong 500 years of possible. Who says science cannot do it? Well, let's see if it can be possible during our own generation. Mehn! Science is a sophisticated. Please, do not be Rank Xerox. We can do so much together. In 1940, blast-resistant rice was developed. In 1953, James Watson and Francis Crick identified the double helix of DNA. This was when scientists started to understand the structure of DNA, and creating breeding based on it started. Plant breeding based on genetic information replaced old ways started gaining ground. Scientists started working directly with DNA.. And then Massive open field cultivation started cos we have seeds which csn tolerate harsh weathers. Mehn! Humans have come a long way. More land areas were cultivated with the invention of tractors and other farm machineries. Then, the breakthrough came and DNA can be isolated. In 1994 Insect resistant cotton was developed. This is one of the first GMO seeds - Introducing foreign genes into the DNA of a plant. The targeted gene is first isolated, and then, injected into a variety to create a new variety. Boom. That was it. However, it came with lots of troubles. And anti GMO seeds came up because there were adverse effect on people. High rates of cancer and autoimmune diseases came into play. I will talk more about this. Please note that, I was a capital NO GMO seeds person as at 2 years ago. But I can tell you that I am beginning to give them consideration. Rather than criticize them, I joined them to let them see the challenges they should pay attention to, and stop them from using political gods to silence concerned people and kill more. In 2000, the game changed totally. Though, introduction of foreign genes was still going on, scientiest came up with Marker-Assisted Selection - locating desirable traits in a plant for efficient selection and breeding. So, rather than tampering with the gene and then extract as a foreign gene into another plant, they found a way of detecting the location of the traits (which we can call gene also). And then they can manipulate it with the 1926 invention of cross breeding. Boom! That was it. And many companies have developed this. This is what everyone doing seeds not labeled as GMO is doing. They find traits (identifying genes without tampering with it), and then fuse the genes together to be more efficient than 1926. Though, crossbreeding is the thing. And they combine with self fertilization also. Since then, many methods have been adopted, among which are creating F1, F2, F3 F4, F5, even up to F30 at times. Another one is backcrossing. Inbreeding and pure breeding then came into play. And this is the motive of all seed companies now. Even this is the case with live stocks. You will hear the terms - grandparents, parents, and commercial breeds in livestocks breeding. They are just telling you that they are: F-series of plants. That's all. And they stopped at a particular serie. If they want to progress and make more money, they simple step down again in the series. First they identify a trait they want and then use a method to stabilize it. It can take some time to get it right, but eventually, they always do. Scientists have seen why they should not tamper with genes and remove it as a foreign entity, but since they can locate them, they know that they need to still go into them directly and manipulate them to achieve better things. You know that the year 2,000 MAS discovery opened their eyes. And this is what Hazera, EastWest, Technisem, RZ etc are all using presently. I want to state that all these methods right from cross breeding is gene manipulation. This is the honest truth, however, tampering with it is what makes GMO seed. They remove the gene and inject it else where in case of GMOs. But the other kind flushes out undesired genes and fused in desired genes. In the olden days, it can take 15 years to get a good product, but now with advance tech, it takes a shorter period of time. Scientists who removed genes and inject as a foreign gene have said they will not stop, but find another way to make theirs better and safer. This is good. So instead of extracting DNAs, they came about with Gene Editing methods. They found a way to start editing genes in plants and animals. This technology is going to lead to cure of many genetically diseases such as sickle cell, cancer, and autoimmune, if and only if it is proven to be safe. It's too early to criticize them. But who wants to be used as a guinea pig? Well, let's see. But it looks promising. Recently, doctors created a genetic pig and transplanted its kidney to human, but the patient used was already brain-dead. However, they saw that the kidney was not rejected as human body used to reject pig's kidney. Of all animals, pigs organs are similar to human. They are even more intelligent than dogs. So, why do people eat pigs? But toy touch dogs, they shout. Why not pigs? For christ sake, pigs are more intelligent and even closer to human than dogs. This is why military doctors used to use pigs to practise trauma surgery some years back. These doctors who treat wounded soldiers dissected many pigs alive. Horrible scene...I must say. So what really happened in the pig-human kidney transplant? They know pig's kidney and ours are similar, but its always been rejected by human body. So, they made research and found the hormone responsible. So they genetically edit the dna of the pig used so that the hormone responsible will be knocked out. And then, they saw that it worked in a brain-dead patient who needed kidney transplant. Viola! Using this technique two products have been created and made known. Though, I know there are others products, but the one I will talk about is the GABA tomato developed in 2020 and registered in 2021 by Japan. They edited the gene of tomato and made it to be able to reduce the pressure in blood. This is being tested on high blood pressured patients presently. Well, I wont eat it now but it makes sense. I know someday, we will have no choice but to accept them. The main concern is the introduction of foreign genes which caused too much damages, and they wanted to force it on us. Monsanto had to start using Bayer cos of bad reputation with GMO. Let's see how gene editing plays out. Meanwhile, markers are still the real deal being used as non GMO seeds. Though, they all alter DNAs. But for the fact that they dont edit or extract them is why they are accepted - natural knock ins and out. But gene editing seems to be the boom. I think if it satisfies many conditions, its producs may not be labeled as GMOs. Already the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) has not yet classified it under GMO and I think has even said it's not in their mandate or so. Really I need to check again. But the issue is that this is a new tech which no one knows how to classify it. I think Japan says, it will not be classified under GMO. But we wont really know until we start seeing the after effect. It looks promising in my opinion, and it will likely make all traditional and conventional methods obsolete if there is little complication with it which they will quickly correct. Now that we know the history of breeding, we can start learning why some seeds are so expensive. I need to tweak your brains in the right direction. Let's go there. |
Re: Tomato Seeds Varieties - TBRFV, Fruiting style, and Yield by Attit: 6:55am On Nov 09, 2021 |
Specimen 1 The choice is yours to make. This is the first specimen. Determinate 2kg average for good farmers per plant, many get less than 0.5kg. Minimum of 10,000 plants per acres. You cater for close to 40,000 plants per ha. More holes to dig for basal More basal fertilizer More workers to be paid for managing You stake. However, seeds are cheaper. To me, this is to be used for mechanized farming and go on extreme high density. Why use it for local 3 plots to 15 plots? For what exactly? This is a wrong move. Look at thee pictures below. To me, there is absolutely no need for staking, and if diseases will kill it...let them kill on second harvest, but go on extreme high density and use machine to harvest. This is the American strategy for rearing commercial tomatoes on 1,000 ha and above. Why are you small farmers going for this? I am not saying they are bad, but they are unwise for you with small farms. For what exactly are you staking for? Like my guy above wrote " they look like HIV/AIDS tomato plant" . On top, you still stake. Na waooo! Those companies need to give us what is more profitable. They can if we demand. And this is why I am.doing this. They need to give us what will give more profit. Well my opinion. You are free to choose and make sellers richer. The ball is in your court. Note that determinate is made by Americans solely for mechanical farming. Why bring such to Africa? Why? This is my anger with these companies esp Technisem and EastWest which can both do better cos they are reputable and have strong base in Africa. So, you should know that these kinds are easier to breed. That's the reason. Lol. They are also cheaper to produce. Lol. Sox start thinking in the right direction. They wont change cos they know most of you want low cost. And we are telling you that you need to change. Start thinking right, and stop being stingy. If you arent rich to farm, stay at home. Stop promoting rubbish on public forums. Let us move to 2021. Haba! Must we stay in 2000 level? Why are we being stagnant? Let's us the standard diseases resistant which all companies are running to achieve: High Reisiatant: Fusariuim Wilt, Verticillium, Nermatodes, and some with bacteria wilt. Medium: TMV and TYLCV. These two virus are ones that they use to say wet and dry season. That TYLCV is saying it can resist tiny insects which is a carrier of that disease. And they are many during dry season. That's why they tell you that it's for dry season. Go and try it na and dont spray well. Dont practise crop rotation, amd see how they will die. They wont tell you the degree of tolerance. But really Cobra and Platimum are trying to be honest. Let's say the truth. No modern viral diseases are targeted. TMV is an old virus that most famers can tackle easily. Habe you ever seen any farmer complain of TMV during rainy seasong these days? So, what target it when there arr remedies which are effective? Of cos, it is cheap to make. So, the choice is yours. Your port to 2015 to present or stay with a tech which was made in early 2000s that they are still pushing to Africa amd some parts of Asia. Look at what happened to this particular one: Enough leaves during vegetative, and then, they produce many flowers. Heat, rain, and other atmospheric condition ripped off many flowers, and boom. Diseases entered (dont get me wrong, it can happen to even the robust plants too), but some of them are tough, and they still survived and produced fruits. Mind you that most of the flowers are produced at once so that they dont produce more flowers again and they die. Boom! that's it. You have no more chance to get flowers. You lose them once, you get low yield. You get it right once, you get to market early and happier. This is the reason americans made it. Get 70% to 90% fruits ig can produce around the same time, and move in machine to harvest. Why are you doing this without using machine? For what reason exactly? They know this is not for you, but since some people moved them in, and you all started buying cos of low cost, they started giving you more. That's it. I would do same if I was a producer.

Specimen 2 Not Determinate The good ones can give 6kg and above. The higher the yield it can give, the more likely you give it more space. Lesser plants population. Most of my choices are 10,000 plants per ha with some are max of 15,000. Mainwhile, you load 40,000 plus with the other ones. You will just die of back pain while digging holes, transplanting, and side dressing. Lol. Less number of holes to dig for basal Less basal fertilizer Less workers to be paid for managing You stake very well. Very strong. All major soil diseases are mostly resisted except bacteria for some. To me bacteria wilt is not a major concern again. Dont get me wrong....it is deadly and if your soil is infected, you better not use anyhow seed. But since it's not the concern of scientists, it will not be really spread again, it will be reduced all round the world drastically soon. They arent making so much profit with it. My opinion though. Lol. But these ones resist modern viral diseases. funny, I think as expensive as RZ and Ezen are they arent resisting much....lol. Go and check them. I am not spoiling their market. RZ is banking more on abiotic stress (this is what my friend above asked me....tolerance to best and cold), instead of more diseases. And truly, this is a big major concern. Why? Human activity is making this world hotter. Heat! Heat!! Heat!!!. The first specimen above always lose flowers crazily, though, there are methods experts can use. But if I tell you what to use, you cant use them cos they arent cheap. Thank God people are seeing that a particular company which sells cheap chemicals is rubbish. How much do you pay to buy a bottle of chemicals for blights and downy mildew? Mainwhile, there are cheap options...do they work? And why should I recommend them on tiny plants when I know your yield will not be high? It doesnt make sense. Rather, when you have a robust plant which doesnt bring all fruiting out so suddenly, you can treat them well. This is what a small farmer should use in my opinion. An example: Size: 140g – 180g. Excellent fruit quality and uniformity. Very good plant vigour. Compact plant with good leaf coverage. Cracking resistant blocky tomato with a long shelf life. Very high yield potential. Good general leaf disease resistance. Extremely high tolerance to heat Cultivation: Open field. HR: Verticillium, 3 races of Fusarium, ToMV, TSWV, Pst, ToTV...and some are having blights too. IR: 2 kinds of Nematodes, TYLCV, Sl. Look at good plant leaf coverage? That's protection from sun heat. It does what? Saves your flower. It has to be robust before it can give such coverage. Start thinking deep. You gat to use a very strong shake even stronger than cucumber stakes. You use those tiny stakes, they drop. I see people cutting bamboos into two and using them to stake. Of course that variety isnt robust enough. And you see people even arguing with me. Lol. People are funny oooo. Small change they have in their pocket, they start feeling themselves. Lol. One man even decided to feed his tiny plants massively to bring out leaves, I laughed. When I asked him his yield, it was poor. Lol. The whole energy was converted to making leaves instead of growing fruits. Since he didnt understand the concept and just read my articles, he was smart in making such decision. But he didnt know the gene of the plants do not allow for such. So many people are smart but at the same time act fo.olishly. My choices of seeds It resists most of the diseases above, and the ones which they dont, I use chemicals or bio agents. However, abiotic stress is vital to me cos of high yield. This is what manufacturers dont tell you. And listen and listen, dem no send you. They will rather face rich farmers in richer nations and tackle their problems before addressing yours here. Who has time to start creating tomatoes with many diseases resistances and then tolerant to heat when they know you cannot pay for the research that brought them out. Sure, they target colder climates where they can make profit. That's it. Shikena. We are the ones going out of our comfort zone to get things done rightly. I wont just listen to sellers cos they want to sell to me. I know what I want, and I go for them. I check from time to time with manufacturers to see what they have. Really, I am.not impressed. I avoid falling to many, and I even pretend to not know much cos their tolerance level is low. My choices must be able to give a good farmer 10kg per plant. This is my standard. However, you may get lower, but I expect minimum of 4kg if you have a reasonable experience with tomatoes and you keep to schedule. Not that you allow your plants fall on the ground, you refuse to mulch (I shouted and shouted before these farmers started seeing that mulching is necessary for small farms), you dont feed well, you dont meet up schedule, etc. I achieved 21kg per plant on 1/4 of a plot with a variety cos I handled it all alone. But when I invited a partner and he stayed on farm with workers while I visited like every 2 weeks, the yield was 9.5kg per plant. And it was massive in crates. I know that if I was permanently on farm and I give instruction to the guy to pass to workers, 15kg is achievable. Please, my variety is not Hezera. I dont use it. I have used it, I like their breeds, but to be honest 1,000 seeds for N30,000 is on the high side. It is the same exact price they sell to farmers in the US. And dollars to naira is killing it here. There is no discount in it. This is the reason. But if you have a huge farm, you can sigh a contract with huge reduction. Still, it is on the high side. So, the seeds above is around 8 to N12 ped seed which will out compete with those robust ones in Nigeria. Not available at all. You also should go and find yours cos I'm not sharing details. Before we know it, they will block it like the one I shared in my last thread. Very greedy people. There is another called Rambo i heard about recently, which someone was telling me that a farmer got 3kg per plant. Hmmmm. Its packed in 10g batches for N25,000 or so. That's like over twice the price of platinum. And that's like N8.3 per seed also. Lol. The disease resistant is not even top notch cos I checked it well...Cobra seniors it in that regard. The choice is yours to make. Look at the pictures below. 1 Like

betabread:Farmer isnt feeding well and plants arent getting enough water. If it's on the farm at this present time, then farmer can do dry season farming successfully if he decides to change his methods. But farmer should not try rainy season if the pictures arent during rainy season. The truth here is that this farmer is stubborn if he is on nairaland. Why waste the small amount the person has? Hoping for success is wrong. Doing it right is the best way. We have discussed it here many times: irrigation is necessary, mulch is necessary for a farmer who doesnt have access to cheap labor. Look at how weed has taken over the farm. Fruits are too tiny. My conclusion is that if this farmer can grow tomato in this condition, this same farmer can make it very big if done properly. You.dont need me to criticize anything. Everything done here is contrary to what I preach. If you are the farmer and you keep forcing it like this, you will keep losing it. And you grow older daily. It's an annual thing. And you have lost a year from the numbers you have on earth. To me, tomato projects is an opportunity to get out of poverty. But every year you waste money and time doing things like this, the door of breakthrough is locked. Till the following year. And those who stubbornly return to farm with old ideas will keep losing it. Look at all those people having reasonable success. They all mulch and are trying their best in their little ways. Where are those who attacked me that mulching is too expensive. Where did these people get the money to mulch from? When you set your mind to do something right, you can do it. But when you decide to be stubborn to force low cost, nothing good will come out. You cannot take these small tomatoes to market and make it. So, why stubbornly suffer yourself in the bush every year? |

is it possible to grow large acrage with only manure..................possibly human manure compost............. How would you go about it especially handling........................ My experience with compost and manure tells me its better than fertilizers......................... handling is my only issue |
Re: Tomato Seeds Varieties - TBRFV, Fruiting style, and Yield by Attit: 2:47am On Nov 22, 2021 |
betabread:Human manure is filled with disease, so must be composted well. And the smell cannot allow local ways to do it. You will just get sick. You need heavy machine to do it. Even livestock poo is dangerous. I pity people who handle them carelessly. And they will even be smiling after correcting them like they are super men. Yes it's possible to use manure, though, plants manure too will be added. But it requires heavy finance. People who cannot buy drip are the ones who will buy heavy machines for commercial organisms food? And the price of organic food is not worth it. It's basically same as chemically produced food. So, why should anyone bother about it? If the price is like 1.5 to 10 times that of inorganic just like how it is in the US, it makes sense. If you want to eat organic, grow it yourself. I grow all my vegetables organically. I dont buy outside. I produce broilers organically too. Every week, I slaughter four 3-kg chickens that's around 8.5kg after removal of organs and skin. You dont know how to use fertilizer. Though, compost is sure good. You still need it, but it can be combined well with manure. Even 99% nutrition can be fertilizer. Using fertilizer needs brain. And if using drip, it is even worse. This is what many dont know. And it is one of the reasons many farmers crash after 2 to 3 years of production. When some farmers have successfully completed first cycle, they cut off everyone who assisted them. Many of them do this to avoid fulfilling their promises. Lol. But they cant return to the people who assited them. This subject about fertilization is vital. See, give such farmer 3 years, everything will crash. To know what to do comes from deep decision making ability, and with a mathematical mind. If I give you a formular for this year, you better not use it again, but ask me. You use it next year and repeat again and again will result in turning your land to a barren land. Many who I gave formulation to, would go and use it again and again. They always crash. With manure, you can survive with a carefree attitude. Just continue dumping there. But with fertilizer, its a different ball game. When you go to fam, you should get better. But Nigerian farmers get worse, and they eventually quit. I know some guys who are gifted with handling workers. They are so good in it. And this is an area I dont even want to know. Cos I cannot be monitoring and running after adults. For what? But those guys who are successful treat workers like animals they are. Funny, they still crash. Why? They mostly succeed the first time. The subsequent ones are losses. But they arent ready to improve. I always advise them to keep changing sites, and they practise leaving their land to rest for 7 to 10 years like our forefather. Lol. Sir, if you do soil preparation well, you will use fertilizer very well. When you continue putting the right living organisms in your soil, and you protect them, and then you follow the right dosage and application method, nothing stops you from making huge harvest back to back, year after years to come on the same land. Dont farm blindly. Always do soil tests. I'm not talking about nutrient tests. A complete test. And it is so expensive. So I dont see how farmers can be consistent here. In the north, they rest land and practise rotation very well. They dont joke with it. But in the south, this is not the case. Please, if you see a farmer who has been winning back to back for the past 5 to 10 years, kindly let me meet the person. They always crash. |

Attit: This is my biggest advantage in manure(compost).................... Remove smell and the level of supervision of workers is low.....................a friend of mine lost a farm recently just because he was not there to monitor the placing of fertilizers........................................ can u give me a strategy to carry manure(swine, poultry, cow, Goats, human or even abbatoir) that is cost effective and requires minimal human handling before being dumped on the farm..... A friend of mine from the north says that is the work for donkeys and camels up there........................... I'm seriously considering raising such farm animals for this purpose..... |

My fellow farmers, I have yam seedlings and fertile land for planting yam. Due to the situation of things, there is no enough fund to carry out the process for this year and I don't want to sell the seedlings. The farm is located at ipetumodu in ile ife, osun state. If you are interested in investing you can call or Whatsapp me on this number 07033602373 |

betabread:Your friend has told you the challenge. Lol. Logistics is expensive. You need to get a van or bus. The other cost effective way is you set up poultry there, but the cost of set up is high. There is no way to do it other than composting it. It takes 21 to 30 days to compost it. It is cost effective when the right organisms are in it, but you will not want to go for that cos the products are not that cheap too. This is what I use. See bro, all the questions you are asking me are all scientific to solve. See, you are going to be a very good farmer cos you are seeing the big picture and the problems. I know you are into farming cos the problems you throw here. I am sure you have seen the power of manure at work. Listen, for 1 acre, I use minimum of 10 tons. I always go all out my way to source for it. 10 tons is like 500 bags. SW sell a bag at maybe N500 to N800, that's like N250k - N400k. How many can afford to spend this? But I do cos I have perfected my system which I know works for me. But people dont see to these things. When I tell people to get a professional advice on soil preparation, they go crazy. They dont want to spend at all, but soil preparation is the fundamental. I wish I can break it down how to do it, but it's not possible cos its scientific. This is supposed to be the job of Agricultural extension officers in private and govt places, but they dont even know it. Lol. Do not near human manure ooo. I plead with you. You will fall sick. And to use abattoir manure, you need to compost it well; else, you will transfer the seeds of the grasses in the manure to your farm. You will regret it. Those grasses cattles eat are terrible grasses, so composting it to black soil is the only option when using cow dung. I dont use it. Look around for pig if your religious doesnt prohibits it. And use poultry too. Some say pig manure is bad, well, I dont use it for its nutrients, it's for soil ammendment I use it for. Let me advise you, go and study how to use fertilizer with manure. This is your best bet. Also, go and buy drip. Your friend killed his plants cos he didn't use drip. Workers are scarce and very few people are crop farm workers. Many workers prefer livestocks cos it is not as tedious as working under the sun, and the pay is similar. Even livestocks workers receive more. So, crop farmers use inexperienced unskilled workers like that people from Niger and some part of the north who do tough work and are daily paid. From what you have written, you are really struggling with your farm. I can deduce you arent using drip, mulch, and other rech to aid you. See, it will be tough for you in SW. I suppose you are in this region. You will just over work yourself. Go and raise fund to get drip and mulch and move into vegetable farming. Even it is just one plot you can do, do it well. Doing many acres and doing it cheaply will only overstress you. |
