10 People feared dead as Tokyo, Auxilliary loyalists clash in Ibadan
From GBENGA ADESUYI, Ibadan Tuesday, May 3 , 2011

Atleast 10 people were feared dead yesterday at Iwo Road and Monatan axis of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital when fighting broke out between the two factions of the state Chapter of National Union of Road Transport Workers{NURTW). Yesterday’s fracas, Daily Sun learnt, might not be unconnected with the “order”by the Alhaji Lateef Akinsola a.k.a Tokyo’s faction that the late Alhaji Lateef Salako’s faction now being led by his second in command, Alhaji Lamidi, Mukaila a.k.a. Auxiliary should step down and hand-over the control of key motor-parks in the metropolis including the popular Iwo Road Motor-park. The new directive by Tokyo’s faction, it was further learnt was necessitated by the recent loss of Governor Adebayo Alao Akala in the April 26 th governorship election in the state. Governor Akala had announced the proscription of the union in the thick of the crisis between his loyalist, late Eleweomo and Tokyo against the order of the National Industrial Court (NIC) which reinstated Tokyo. Some members of the union had trooped to the street of Ibadan, especially in areas like Olomi, Bere singing victorious song, immediately it was announced that Senator Abiola Ajimobi of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) was the new governor-elect of the state. The announcement had raised hope that the proscribed union by Governor Akala would be given freedom to operate by the incoming government of Senator Ajimobi However yesterday, attempt by Tokyo’s faction to take total control of Iwo-Road motor parks was heavily resisted by the Auxilliary group, leading to a serious fight between the two factions during which dangerous weapons were freely used. The attack was coming on the heels of a statement issued by Tokyo where he raised an alarm that his faction had uncovered a grand plot by a group of government-sponsored agents, who are dissatisfied with the outcome of the April 26 , 2011 governorship election, to wreak havocs in some strategic locations of the state with a view to causing anarchy before the May 29 handing-over date. In the statement which was made available to journalists in Ibadan , Tokyo alleged that the disgruntled elements had already acquired hundreds of T-shirts upon which they had deliberately printed either his symbol or the Logo of the victorious opposition party, all in their purported plan to make members of the public believe that the political party is behind the orgy of violence and also to rope him in. He advised NURTW members across the 33 Local government areas in the state not to fall into the trap by distancing themselves from the unscrupulous and self-serving elements, adding that the hoodlums had resolved to unilaterally cause breakdown of law and order in the state before May 29 handover date. The NURTW members should rather join forces with the Progressives to take the Pacesetter State to greater heights, in the overall interest of generations yet unborn, Tokyo said. He described the victory of Senator Ajimobi of ACN in the just-concluded governorship election in the state as signifying the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. The statement reads: “Of much more significance is the fact that Senator Ajimobi’s emergence as Governor-elect marks the Dawn of a Great Change for Oyo State, Nigeria’s Pacesetter State, as opposed to the present tension-soaked reign of political rascality and Executive oppression,” he stated. “The era of impunity and lack of respect for the Rule of Law, Equity and Social Justice is fast crumbling like a pack of cards in Oyo State and will finally fade off the scene only in a matter of days when the governor-elect formally takes oath of office.”
