Former Imo State Governor and Nigerian Senator representing Imo West Senatorial District, Rochas Okoracha has said the government needs to use the traditional rulers to address sectarian tensions in the south-eastern part of the country.

The Senator, who hails from the separatist crisis zone, said Igbo community leaders did not support what was happening in the region, although they could not come out and criticise it, due to the anger of their youths.

"A lot of people are scared, you talk and tomorrow they go get your child killed." he said.

He alleged that there were major instigators of violence in all parts of Nigeria, and that the Government should crack down on them.

The former Governor told the BBC that when the IPOB started in the South, their situation was taken as a joke, "unemployed children, they want to be known but surprisingly it has become a problem".

"Most of the people who do this thing when you look at them you don't say they have a profession, they are not considered as a threat," said the Senator.

He explained that most of the youths who are causing the crisis are struggling with the lack of basic amenities such as electricity and water.

He said calls by some parts of the country for IPOB to be allowed to secede from Nigeria were impossible due to the dispersal of Igbos in Nigeria.

However, he acknowledged that President Buhari had failed to follow up on his appointees - "look back at how they work, work between themselves and not play with work".
