ACF Opposes Scrapping Of NYSC, Condemns Killings by Nobody: 7:43am On May 05, 2011 |
Congratulates Jonathan, Jega, others THE Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) yesterday opposed agitation by some individuals and groups for the abolition of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) following the killings of some corps members during the post-election violence in the northern part of the country. The ACF, whose members met in Kaduna yesterday, said the NYSC has become a symbol of unity for the nation, pointing out that dismantling it would mean that Nigerians should not settle down and reside outside their states of origin. Besides, the Northern elders who met to review the performance of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) under the chairmanship of Prof. Attahiru Jega and the aftermath of the general elections said “while condemning the killings of some NYSC members who were victims of the violence in some parts of the country, it is the considered opinion of ACF that the NYSC scheme should not be abolished”. The National Working Committee (NWC) meeting of ACF was chaired by its National Chairman, Alhaji Aliko Muhammed and attended by notable figures in the north. A statement issued and signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the Forum, Mr. Anthony Sani after the meeting, gave reasons the Federal Government should continue to sustain the NYSC programme, saying “this is precisely because the ideals of fostering national unity which informed the establishment of NYSC are still relevant. “What is more, scrapping NYSC is as good as saying people should not settle outside their states of origin. Therefore, NYSC scheme should be retained and spirited efforts be made to ensure the security of members”. The ACF congratulated President Goodluck Jonathan, the governors and members of the National Assembly, as well as the state assemblies “over their victory in the general elections and for their successes.” The Arewa elders also commended Jega “for conducting elections that have been generally adjudged by both the local and international observers to be better than previous elections. “As to the losers, the Forum wishes to congratulate them for their spirited efforts in providing the electorate with alternative platforms needed in a democracy, since democracy without opposition is a sham”. The group said “losers should, therefore, be equananimous in defeat and seek redress through due process of law where it is absolutely necessary. Victors, on the other hand, should be magnanimous in victory and recognize the fact that governance is an art of balancing competing demands among constituent parts of the united whole”. Sani further argued that “leadership is expected to have a realistic appreciation of the circumstances of its emergence and make consciously directed efforts by bringing Nigerians together and enable them to unleash their synergy by way of living up their collective challenges”, while adding that “this is very necessary because no nation thrives on the victory of its factions but through their ultimate reconciliations”. “And in order to make the desired results come to pass, governments must be peopled by those with vision, conviction, public intelligence and with patriotic courage needed to tell power not just what it wants to hear but also what it needs to hear”. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=46958:acf-opposes-scrapping-of-nysc-condemns-killings&catid=1:national&Itemid=559 |

NYSC should be scrapped, period. If not then the corps members should have a say in where they'll serve. |

Why woont ACF oppose the scrapping of NYSC. They are simply protecting their interest. You see Northerners opposing the scrapping while the Southerners propose the scrapping. Here we know why it is like this. The north has used this issue of national unity to cheat the south. They post the southern graduates to the north where they go and become teachers while they post the northern graduates to south where they become oil workers. The ACF has critically viewed the merits of this scheme on their youths and hence are crying out on why it should not be scrapped. Is it NYSC that has been uniting this country? Sometime ago corpers were mandated to serve only in schools but it wasn't auspicious to the north so they tactically killed that decision. When people go for job interviews on a production company, the northerner has experience in oil and firm while the southerner has experience in teaching, who stands better chance of landing the job based on experience?, The northerner. If they won't scrap NYSC, let them creat a level play ground for all graduates. Either everybody serves in schools or everybody serves in oil companies. If the latter is not possible, then the former is the only option but in fairness to all concerned, let NYSC be scapped or made involuntory and strictly teaching. |

^^^ Good point. Whe expects the northerners to loose a free educated labor market a.ka. NYSC? These southern kids have been paying with their sweat for Nigeria's unity since 1973 by slaving in the north and getting nothing in return after the year. Now, the northerners want the kids to pay with their blood too. These ACF fools ought to know that a persistent, one-sided, and forceful enslavement our kids wouldn't make for unity |

They know that they would be at a loss if the scheme is scrapped. Why didn't they warn and advice their youth before the elections to maintain peace? Even during the killings, they were silent. Now they have found their voice. They are very stoopid. |
