11 killed in Benue communal clash, herders burn down houses

No fewer than 11 people were reportedly killed in separate attacks in the Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State on Sunday.

According to locals, nine people were killed in a communal clash between Ailla and Adagbo communities, while two were killed by Fulani herdsmen in an attack on Odugbeho community.

The PUNCH gathered that Ailla and Adagbo communities were embroiled in a renewed communal clash, leading to the death of several people, while many others were injured.

“There has been a protracted crisis between Ailla and Adagbo communities which resurfaced yesterday (Sunday). The cause of the renewed crisis is yet to be ascertained, but some people were killed and many others injured,” an indigene, who identified himself as Ada, said.

Our correspondent learnt that the same day, herders invaded Odugbeho community, exactly a week after members of the group attacked the community and killed 27 people.

A resident, who identified himself as Uloko, said the hoodlums attacked the village around 5.30pm on Sunday and set ablaze 21 houses.

Uloko said, “We heard privileged information about this Sunday attack and this was related to security operatives, who failed to act on the information given to them.

“It was around 5.30pm that they came, the same time they came last Sunday. They came in their numbers with superior firepower and shot continuously, burning down houses.”

The Chairman of the LGA, Sule Adohi, said nine people were killed in the communal clash and two people killed in the herdsmen’s attack.

He added that the herders burnt 21 houses.

The Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Catherine Anene, said she had yet to get the report.

One of the reasons killer herdsmen are having a free reign in Benue is because the indigenes are not united against the killers. Some will be happy when herdsmen raid their "enemies" who are neighbours and could even provide guidance to the killers.

I am even suspecting Ortom for his lack of leadership and cowardice.
He is probably being favored by some of those killings.

Everyday this keeps happening but buhari is only interested in the dot in a circle people in order to oppress them and make them remember the genocide inflicted on their parents.

The Niger deltans have seen the handwriting on the wall already and quickly rebuking the herdsmen in all angles and thereby siding with the igbos as their blood relatives.

Unfortunately this administration has managed to bring out the worst in everyone. For a long time we were hearing that it wasn't Buhari but the people around him. However the Arise TV interview Buhari gave just shattered all that illusion and confirmed the worst fears and suspicions of people.

My fellow Nigerians. Its one thing to have a president who shows some bias towards his region or tribe. Its another thing to have a president who is an outright bigot with a lot of hatred in him. Someone with a closed mindset, high handed arrogance and complete disregard for the concerns of other people.

Perhaps his character traits might be useful as a general in a battle field, but we should be very concerned that this man will end up becoming life president and will rule by force because he knows that a more benign president coming in might reverse most of the rubbish he has done. He will want to stay for at least another 20 years to make sure that all he has done is permanently bedded in. Perhaps this is partly the reason why he has let the country burn so as to have a perfect excuse to suspend the constitution and introduce martial law.

God will help us in Nigeria because the killing is too much, Innocent blood is too much in this country.
