Fans baffled by Cristiano Ronaldo’s Coca-Cola snub after pictures emerge of Portugal star endorsing soft drink and KFC

The Portugal international removed two of the sugary drinks that were placed in front of him during his press conference earlier this week.
Ronaldo, 36, then declared to those watching to 'Drink water,' which caused a £2.84billion drop in the company's share price.

Speaking last year, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner revealed his disdain for Coke after saying his son Cristiano Jr sometimes consumes fizzy drinks.

He said: "We’ll see if my son will become a great footballer.

"Sometimes he drinks coke and eats crisps and it irritates me, he knows that."


But supporters of Ronaldo have been left confused by his Coke snub after digging up pictures and old videos of him endorsing the brand.

And the former Manchester United hero has even worked with fast food giants KFC and McDonald's in recent years.

His former Old Trafford team-mate Wayne Rooney previously declared Ronaldo would gorge on Big Macs in an attempt to gain weight during his time in England.

Commenting on Ronaldo's Coke incident, boxer Josh Warrington quipped: "We’ve all contradicted ourselves before haven’t we…?"



Another messaged: "He's a father now. He needs to be their role-model and eat/drink healthily."

A third joked: "The Beatles song ‘Money’ comes to mind, I can’t think why though..."

Bookmakers Paddy Power tweeted: "Cristiano Ronaldo removed bottles of Coca-Cola during a #Euro2020 press conference, encouraging people to drink water instead.

"Fair play. Doesn't mind big buckets of fried chicken, though."

To which KFC jokingly replied by saying: "Yeah Paddy, but everyone knows Ronaldo’s decent on the wings."

Coke has since issued a statement in response to CR7's actions, saying "everyone is entitled to their drink preferences" and that everyone has different "tastes and needs".

A spokesperson added: "Players are offered water, alongside Coca-Cola and Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, on arrival at our press conferences."

The fact that he endorsed it then, didn't actually mean he was consuming it.

He probably was doing it for the money at the time.

So since money ain't no problem any longer, I think it's definitely right he led by Example.

Previously endorsed is not the same thing as currently endorsed. Coca Cola isn't paying him, so why should their drink be put in front of him? It sends the message he approves of it so he put it away. Notice that the water he replaced it with is unbranded.

He could also have done what he did as a power move. Losing 4billion dollars is no joke even for a company like Coca Cola. Other companies will be watching and understand the power of the Ronaldo Effect. Apart from being the GOAT, he's also the most marketable person in the world.
