The General Overseer of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, David Oyedepo has supported the proposed social media regulation by the Nigerian Government.

He gave the charge in his address on Friday at the seventh convocation of Landmark University, Omu-Aran, Kwara state.

According to him, unlimited access to social media platforms is robbing youths of their future, while he called for urgent steps to check unrestricted access to social media.

The Landmark University's chancellor explained that many young people spend most of their time chatting, with lesser time to engage in productive tasks.

“It unconsciously robs people of their future by robbing them of their time — no time to think; no time to plan; no time to programme,” Oyedepo said.

“This generation may lose her heroes to social media disaster. Here is one creeping serpent that is eating up the destinies of many individuals.

“We must wake up from our slumber to deal with this monster. Young people, beware! Addiction to social media is like addiction to drugs. It can render a whole destiny useless.

“This social media saga has eroded the substance of destiny of most youths today. What is supposed to be a plus has suddenly become a major minus, because everything of value delivers through investment of time.

“Suddenly, we are faced with a generation on the wrong side of history; the honour of this generation has been wiped off — chatting all day with no time left to think, plan, programme and engage productively in the pursuit of any task.

“Many youths spend less than 10 to 20 percent of their time on their tasks per day. They can never match a generation that spends 70 percent to 80 percent of their time on their tasks.

“We must devise means to put a check on free access to social media, particularly those that are not adding values. Life is a race. Everyone should get on the track, ready for the run of their lives.”

I'm disappointed, this is an example of irrational thinking. He can as well encourage FG to ban mobile phone and laptops entirely since yahoo boys use it for fraud.

Ban kitchen knives because women are now using it to kill their husbands and boyfriends.

The benefits of social media can never be overlooked, if not for YouTube I wouldn't have learnt coding, graphics design or game development.

If not for Nairaland, I wouldn't have known freelancing works and how to go about getting clients abroad who pay well.

If not for Facebook, I wouldn't know the best and trending products to dropship.

If not for Twitter, SARS will still be out there killing youths for owning an iPhone.

Whats my own, can they really sensor social media? I don't think it's ever going to happen. Nigerians are very smart people with dump leaders so they will end up playing catchup.

If you old men dont take time, we the youths of this God forsaken country would rise one day and wipe you all out. You old men who have refused to die or make way for the youths have pushed us to the wall enough. No food, no job, poor education system, no light, no good road, poor healt system and yet the little thing that helps the depressed youths to manage their frustration you old men want to regulate.

If you are a true child of God sell all those your useless private jets and give them to poor Nigerian youths to start up business.

The truth is whatever have advantage equally have a disadvantage. If only the present government r not thinking of banning or regulating Twitter for their selfish and wicked reasons it would have been a welcome development. But we can’t trust this present govt judging from what we see n how cared less the media aids are with words.

Social media is a way of life that has impact unlimited knowledge into the life of both young and older people. Provide thousands of job opportunities to people in a failed country like ours. People who are isolated, primitive, gullible, controlled and blinded either by politics or Religion have all been freed by social media so I am not surprised this is coming from a supposed Daddy G.O as una dey call am!

I agree to an extent with this, this year I have found out how distracting notifications can be.

Try it for a day, turn on do not disturb, and work on a task

Is he facing competition on how to control minds from the internet?

Are the sheeples beginning to lookup information that ordinarily are not to be questioned from social media?

I can only say they are one of the same: whether church leaders or government officials.

They want same thing: to control how you think so they can fleece you.
