Ae Funai Guidance And Counseling Unit Trains Sug Officials On Leadership by cyborgFUNAI: 2:23pm On Jun 20, 2021
In a bid to build the leadership capacity of students, the Guidance and Counseling Unit, Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu Alike, Ebonyi State, yesterday organized a one-day special Leadership Training for the newly-elected Students Union Government (SUG) officials and Departmental Presidents. The specific objective of the training was to equip the Students’ Union leaders with the relevant leadership skills and attributes needed in discharging their duties as leaders.

While declaring the event open, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sunday Oge Elom, represented by the Dean Students Affairs, Dr. N. A. Obasi, noted that the training came at a critical time in the University with the emergence of the new Students’ Union Government. He enjoined them to take the training seriously in order to learn and imbibe vital leadership qualities that could stand them out as students’ leaders and ambassadors of the University.

Speaking earlier, the Head, Guidance and Counseling Unit, Dr. (Mrs.) Ngozi Nwudu, while addressing the students, maintained that the essence of organizing the training was to develop a cordial relationship between the Students Union Government and other students and help the Union leaders imbibe and abide by the ethics of the University as well as teach them how to handle students within the limits of their power.

Dr. (Mrs.) Eunice Eze, one of the resource persons, who spoke on ‘’Qualities of a Good Leader and the Impact in University Community’’, explained that to be a leader is a very big task, noting that a good leader leads by example. She further pointed out the qualities of a good leader as communication, vision, accountability, gratitude, humility, respect to others etc. Mrs. Eze encouraged the students’ leaders to be democratic in nature instead of autocratic, neglectful and permissive.

In her presentation titled, ‘’Skills Acquisition for Leadership Development”, the Head, Academic Staff Matters (ASM), Dr. (Mrs.) Gloria Okorie, represented by Mr. James Omereagbo Egba, stressed that the era has gone when students graduate from the University and job opportunities were already available for them. She therefore advised students to acquire the right skill-sets that can sustain them after university education instead of waiting endlessly for white collar jobs that are in short supply.

He assured the University Management of their commitment to running a virile Union, with effective and functional leadership at the core. He also pledged to ensure that other students were trained to acquire the right leadership ethos in order to ensure peace and progress in the University.
