Please Help A Nairalander Suffering From Intimidation by Young23340(m): 9:11am On Jun 24, 2021 |
Good morning nairalanders. It's quite unfortunate I had to create a new account; I don't know if mods banned my other account, I found out I cannot create a topic with it. I have been an active member of nairaland for over 2 years now. Please I have something bothering me and I'm here to seek for advice, opinions etc, I don't mind if your contribution is against my opinion, I welcome everyone's opinion. So, I live in a big compound with many apartments; flats, 2 rooms apartment, and single rooms. The landlord also lives in the compound with his family, they occupy 3 rooms and parlour with a shop in front of the compound belonging to his wife. Now, here is the problem; before now, payment of light bill had always been according to the number of rooms you occupy; the landlord pays higher because of the number of rooms he occupies, plus the wife's shop, the ones living in 3 rooms follow, after that comes the ones occupying 2 rooms self-contain and finally we living in one room self con. All of a sudden, they brought a new policy that light bill will always be shared equally. We have debated this countless times but because I and the other lady who also occupies one room cannot match their strength, they have refused to listen to us. For some time now, this has been disturbing me and I had to tell the landlord to disconnect my line. Please how do I go about this and do you think I'm being rational here? Please, your advice, opinion and points to counter their reasons are needed. Mods, if you can help me push it to the front page, I would be grateful. |

Bro, I think you are fighting for what you think is right. I was once in your shoes. Then, as a student, I was in one room (not self con). There were also about five other single rooms there occupied. More so, they were family men with two-rooms and so on. The landlord occupied a bungalow in the same compound...but the funny reality was when they was a nepa bill, it is expected we pay the same amount as those who use more rooms and more appliances. We students always complained. The highest voltage in my room was my pressing iron: I had no tv then, no CD. Because it was favouring the landlord and other self-conceited tenants, they bluntly politicized our concerns. This thing happens in virtually every rented places. It is a pain we much bear. If you lay much emphasis on it, those tenants with more rooms will develop hate for you and start keeping malice. Selfish pastards! What I'll do? I'll not disconnect..because that kinda landlord no go gree you connect again. More so, I'll spend more using fuel for gen. Just behave like you are the only reasonable person there. Go to work, come back. Pay the bills, no much talk. Let other concerned neighbours continue fighting your battles if they like. Injustice is among the founding founders of Nigeria, bro. 2 Likes |

Bob Marley — ''You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have'' It's because they saw that you're powerless and no match for them that's the reason why they took advantage of your cool nature. How can you be paying for what you're not using? You have to take control of the situation ASAP, or else you would be paying more for electricity. |
Re: Please Help A Nairalander Suffering From Intimidation by Nobody: 9:15am On Jun 24, 2021 |
Electricity bill shouldn't really be based on the number of rooms but the personal consumption and equipment of each person, except that it's logical to assume individuals with more rooms consume more electricity but this isn't true all the time. Some people live in three rooms but don't stay there much while someone in a single room is always around using the electricity. The first question I'll ask is, what is their reason for suddenly bringing a new policy of equal payment? This looks like cheating for those living in single room self contained but if there's no way to win over the case, why not get yourself electric cookers and save the money used on gas. Buy deep freezer, big TV, iron, buy an arc welding machine if possible to pacify yourself. Nobody loves to be cheated, so balance the equation in a productive way. 1 Like 1 Share |

I can almost tell you’re a millennial. Well, there are some one room apartment that have more appliances than the bigger apartments. Its not always about the size of the house. A usual Nigerian home would have a fridge, a TV set, a pressing iron etc. Same as would a one room most times. There are also cases where the one room apartment has less appliances. Sometimes you’ve got to understand the people you are living with and their intellectual capacity. Also not every battle is worth fighting, no matter how right you think you are, you must be ready to negotiate and compromise. The amount you were paying previously and now; is it much of a difference? If its not just forget it. If it is then go and speak to the landlord about it, I hope its not too late for that. |

Gratefulheart1:No tangible reason for the new policy oo, one of the tenants just woke up one morning and started shouting that she doesn't know why the light bill is not shared equally. That we living in one room should go and buy gadgets These are people I don't even want to have much to do with because of their feltish nature oo |

drmikeadams:Between the ranges of #1700-#2000. Depending on how much NEPA charges us for the month. So, with the new policy, I will be paying #2,700-3k |

There's no need for disconnection, get more appliances that will match what your are paying, let 'em come and challenge you for using more appliances. Then get yourself ready for their madness. Check my rule 2. |

This made me remember what happened years back when Maale called me say one of her tenants occupying a room selfcon apartment refused to pay same amount for IKEDC bill as others who are occupying 2bedroom apartments , that I should call and warn him. I told her straight up that the tenant was right, how can he be paying same amount with others when’ he’s occupying just a single room and if i be the tenant i no go pay. Next thing i go hear na “Omo ale”(used to it anyways) that she made a mistake calling. I went there sha and have it sorted . So Op stand your ground, no allow dem intimidate you. |
