Consultants’ Strike Paralyses Services At Unth by darkfishet: 12:49pm On May 09, 2011 |
By Tony Edike ENUGU – MEDICAL services at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, UNTH, Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu, have been paralysed following the withdrawal of services by members of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria, MDCAN, in the teaching hospital. Consultants in the hospital suspended clinical services to patients last Thursday after a congress of the association resolved to embark on an “immediate strike ” to protest what they called “serial underpayment and non-payment of several allowances from 2001 to date.” In the notice of withdrawal of clinical services signed by Dr. I. J. Okorafor and Dr. I. O. Onwuekwe, Chairman and Secretary of MDCAN UNTH chapter, respectively, the consultants vowed that the strike would only be called off, if the management of the hospital corrected the anomalies and paid their outstanding arrears. The notice dated May 5, 2011, and addressed to the outgoing Chief Medical Director of UNTH, Dr. Tony Mbah, recalled that several notices had been given to the management, the last of which was through a letter with reference No. MDCAN/04/11/S.7, dated April 28, 2011, in which one week extension to a strike notice that elapsed more than six weeks ago, was issued. Giving reasons for the strike, the aggrieved consultants lamented that the hospital’s management had persistently underpaid certain allowances since 2001. http://darkfishent.com/Home/consultants%E2%80%99-strike-paralyses-services-at-unth |
