It is best to run certain tests on babies to check for disorders that are not visible immediately after delivery. Many of these disorders are usually genetic, hormone-related or blood. To collect a baby’s blood, a heel-prick is used and blood samples are extracted in drops. The blood samples drops are contained in a small vial or on a special paper when is sent for testing after a viable quantity has been collected. The following are tests that are run on newborns: Sickle cell disease: This disorder is an inherited disease which is common throughout much of sub-Saharan Africa, affecting up to 3% of births in some parts of the continent. The disease causes a severe form of anemia. Early diagnosis of sickle cell disease can help lower some of the risks which include severe infections, blood clots, and stroke. Phenylketonuria (PKU): PKU is a birth disease that causes an amino acid called phenylketonuria to build up in the body. It is an inherited disorder in which the body cannot metabolize a protein called phenylalanine. Maple syrup urine disease: Maple syrup urine disease is a genetic disorder characterized by deficiency of an enzyme complex that is required to break down the three branched chain amino acid. This is an inherited disorder that is very common in the Mennonite population. The name comes from the characteristic odor of maple syrup in the baby's urine caused by the abnormal protein metabolism. If untreated, it is life threatening as early as the first two weeks of life. Even with treatment, severe disability and paralysis can occur. Galactosemia: Galactosemia is a rare genetic disorder that affects how your body metabolizes galactose. Galactose is a simple sugar found in milk, cheese, yogurt, and other dairy products. When it's combined with glucose, it makes lactose. Galactosemia means having too much galactose in the blood. Without treatment (avoidance of milk), galactosemia can be life threatening. Symptoms may begin in the first two weeks of life. All states screen for galactosemia. Congenital hypothyroidism: This is inadequate thyroid hormone production in newborn infants. It can occur because of an anatomic defect in the gland, an inborn error of thyroid metabolism, or iodine deficiency. mtcheww!! talk all these rubbish without mentioning the no ONE test before any other stupid test! DNA TEST FIRST BEFORE ANY OTHER! FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SHOULD SUBSIDIZE OR CUT DOWN THE COST OF DNA TEST TO AS LOW AS 20K! CHARGING N250K FOR DNA TEST IS NATIONAL SABOTAGE AND SHOULD BE CLASSIFIED AS TREASON! ANY WOMAN THAT GIVES A MAN A CHILD THAT IS NOT HIS SHOULD BE LIABLE TO 20 YEARS IMPRISONMENT WITHOUT AN OPTION OF FINE! |
