It has been projected that if trends in the production of cocoa in the country is not improved, cultivation of the crop will cease within twenty years.

A report noted that this is hinged on the under utilization and crude farming methods of the cash crop.

The report stressed that, despite Nigeria being the fourth-biggest cocoa-producing nation with over 300,000 tons of cocoa annually, the country is yet to take full advantage of the cash crop for several reasons.

” Firstly, many of the cacao trees in Nigeria are old, as the people who cultivate them. Secondly, the farming methods many of the country’s farmers use are obsolete.

” Finally, chemicals are used in the cultivation of cocoa beans in an inappropriate manner. Nigerians have also failed to diversify the use of their cocoa to make products other than chocolate, such as cocoa butter, cocoa powder, and cocoa liquor,” the report alluded.

Interestingly, lovers of chocolate celebrate the annual World Chocolate’s Day today,- July 7. Ivory Coast, Ghana, Indonesia, Nigeria and Cameroon are recorded as the top cocoa-producing countries in 2021, while Switzerland, Germany, Ireland, United Kingdom, United States, Sweden are noted among top consumers of chocolate.
