THE Federal Government has ordered a full-scale investigation into the post-election violence in the northern part of Nigeria, leading to the gruesome killings of nine National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members on election duties in Bauchi State.

President Goodluck Jonathan, on Monday, made good his promise to bring the perpetrators of the dastardly act to book, when he approved the constitution of a 22-member probe panel headed by Sheik Ahmed Lemu.

Lemu, a former Grand Khadi of Niger State, was also the chancellor of Fountain University, Osogbo, Osun State.

President Jonathan had vowed to deal with all those behind the widespread violence in the northern section of the country, arising from the declaration of the results of the 2011 presidential election which he won.

He equally promised the establishment of a judicial commission of inquiry to examine the remote and immediate causes of the crisis, even as he vowed that those who instigated the violence would surely be brought to book.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Alhaji Mahmud Ahmed Yayale, in a statement announcing the constitution of the investigative panel in Abuja, said the panel would also investigate the pre-election violence in Akwa Ibom State, where four people were reportedly killed and vehicles worth N2 billion destroyed.

The SGF, in statement with Reference number Ref. No.SGF.19/S.108/5 and signed by the Permanent Secretary (GSO), Mr Femi Olayisade, entitled “Constitution of Federal Government Investigation Panel on Election Violence and Civil Disturbances,” said the panel would be inaugurated by the president tomorrow by 11.00 a.m in the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The panel would also ascertain the number of persons who lost their lives or sustained injuries during the violence and identify the spread and extent of loss and damage to means of livelihood. It would also assess the cost of damage to personal and public properties and places of worship and make appropriate recommendations.

Other terms of reference included investigating the sources of weapons used in the unrest and recommending how to stem the tide of illegal flow of such weapons to the country.

While Sheikh Lemu will serve the panel as chairman, Justice Samson Uwaifo (retd) would serve as the vice chairman with Mr F. F. Ogunshakin serving as the secretary.

Other members of the panel included Reverend Father Idowu Feron; Alhaji Muhammadu Danmadami, Chief Ajibola Ogunshola; Mrs Lateefat Okunnu; M. B. Wali; Dr (Mrs) Timiebi A. Koripamo-Agary; Comrade Peter Esele; Alhaji Muhammed Ibrahim and Professor Femi Odekunle.

The rest were Ambassador Ralph Uwuche; Alhaji Bukar Usman; Sheikh Adam Idoko; Major-General Mohammed Said (retd); Mr P.C. Okorie; Mr Shamsuna Ahmed; Major-General L.P. Ngubane; Alhaji Sani Maikudi; Rear Admiral I. Hotonu and serving member of NYSC.
