Olamide is a legend in the industry, and when they’re talking about GOATs, he cannot be denied a seat at the table.
His music, which has evolved many times over the years – and thankfully so – is beloved by millions of fans worldwide. What started as a local boy just rapping to some ID Cabasa beats has become a global and international brand.

But today, some people still look at the trajectory of the man’s iconic career and conclude that Baddo is underrated. Maybe they’re right and Olamide is truly underrated. Or maybe they’re not?

Wizkid, Davido & Olamide

Like Davido and Wizkid, Olamide emerged as an upcoming artist in the early 2010s. It was a time when the Nigerian music industry started to veer towards definitive sounds.

Wizkid and Olamide, who were nominated in the same category in 2011, alongside Davido, quickly became the face of the music industry. Within five years, they’ve all built their brands and grew their base and were formidable in the industry.

The three of them were always pitched together and always talked about together. There were always debates about who was the biggest among the three guys. It was always Wizkid, Davido, and Olamide.

Then Burna Boy Happened

Suddenly, in 2018, Burna Boy became a household name with the release of his acclaimed studio album, “Outside” and hit songs like “Ye” and “Gbona.”

In 2019, he released his most important album yet, “African Giant” and got a Grammy nomination. Although he didn’t win that year, it was around that time he started getting into conversations with Wizkid and Davido.

Burna Boy is a singer and was a champion of the new afro-fusion sound. That made waves for him offshore and in no time, his only rival was Wizkid and sometimes, maybe Davido.

With his Grammy win earlier this year, the ranking became Burna Boy, Wizkid, and then Davido. People barely mention Olamide alongside the likes of Wizkid anymore. And when they do, Baddo is rated below them.

If you look at how Olamide‘s individual career has grown over the years, in contrast to how people rate him, especially alongside his peers, you’d find that it’s disproportionate.

We could argue that Olamide isn’t exactly doing the numbers people like Wizkid and Burna Boy are pulling, and it’ll be valid because it’s true.

But is international influence and Billboard chartings enough reason to rate an artist below another, when they have almost the same impact on the culture and are both relevant?
