A man seen on social media involved in looting at a Woolworths outlet in South Africa's coastal city of Durban has now decided to plead not guilty.

Mbuso Moloi (30) appeared in court on Thursday. He allegedly stole from the upmarket outlet while driving a Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupé and this action sparked outrage and widespread condemnation.

He was placed behind bars last month after being spotted in a widely circulated video online carrying goods from the store during the deadly unrest following the arrest of Jacob Zuma.

He faces charges of public violence, theft, trespassing and contravening national road traffic regulations for allegedly operating a vehicle with a false number plate.

The National Prosecuting Authority said: “The matter was previously postponed as Moloi had previously indicated to the court on record that he intended on pleading guilty to the charges against him. However, in court today, Moloi advised the court that he no longer wanted to plead guilty. The matter was postponed to 12 October 2021 for further investigations.”

Moloi will remain out on R5,000 (N140,000) bail.

A Durban man looted in style and laughed about it but he didn't have the last laugh. Police have confirmed the Mercedes Benz-driving man has been arrested. This was after his video set social media abuzz.

What store sells coffins and other everyday items ? After days of looting some people went for whatever establishments were still standing in their neigbourhoods like funeral parlors. Besides, doesn't a coffin cost more than a TV on the black market?

I'm glad you're singling him out on this one and not painting a general picture of South Africans. Anyway, there's a market for stolen caskets in SA and some other countries. I just get a sense most Nigerians think he stole it so he can sleep in it in his house for fun, which I doubt is the case.

Either way, he's still a goat like u say - I agree.
