Well in 1980 the economy was a lot better because of high oil prices. My parents had a combined income of 360 naira montlhly and were able to meet family needs and sponsor two of my dad's relatives to school on that income All in all, Nigeria's problem is simple. Our source of income is based on something whose price we don't control. Yesterday it was cocoa cotton and palm oil. Today it is crude oil. 2 Likes |

CasNova: By 1982 the oil prices began crashing. And with it the economy. By 1986 the effects were in full bloom. In 1990 oil prices rose again and stayed high due to the Gulf crisis and the resulting wars. |

Aharpride1: Naira was strong then because oil prices were high then and had been for 7 years So we had enough forex to keep the naira buffered Add the fact that our forex needs were not as high as they are now. ( The phone you use was imported with forex. In 1980 many Nigerians had never seen or used a phone) 1 Like |

The honest truth is that Nigeria NEVER made substantial progress since the 80's. All that happended was we had an oil price spike between 2003 and 2014, mainy caused by increased demand from China, and that allowed Obasanjo and GEJ to give the impresion that things were getting better, but in reality the fundementals of the country have never improved. We are still mostly an importing nation, that imports even the most basic of goods, that is why the value of Niara is constantly on a downward trajectory. Critical infrastructure in the power sector remains absent. Things are even worse now, because of the added issue of extreme insecurity. The youths really need to organise themselves in advance of 2023. If they allow the old man to contiune to divide them on the basis of eithinc group, they will only have themselves to blame. It is their future the old men and women are consuming today. 3 Likes |

valentineuwakwe: Sanusi and CNN’s Christian Amanpour campaigned live on CNN for Buhari to replace Goodluck Jonathan even three days before the 2015 presidential election in Nigeria. Right from when he was Governor of the CBN, Sanusi started to campaign for change to replace Goodluck Jonathan with a president from the north. From the Central Bank, Sanusi said Jonathan’s government shouldn’t be trusted with anything. It’s the turn of Buhari’s 5% to preside over Nigeria from 2023, to systemize the country. If not, the weeping and gnashing of teeth continue in Nigeria. Nature hates injustice. 5 Likes

Beancounter94:In addition in the 70's and 80's we had an industrial base in Nigeira. If you take car's for example, most people either had a peugeot or VW, both of which were assembled in Nigeria. We had Thermolcool fridges and KDK fans all made in Nigeria. Dunlop tires all made in Nigeria. This reduced the need for FX for importnation and helped keep the value of Niara higher. 4 Likes 1 Share |
