Bayelsa State Government has rewarded players of victorious Bayelsa United, Bayelsa Queens and Blessing Oborududu after their superlative performance in the 2020/2021 Aiteo Cup formerly known as and the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

At the ceremony held at the Government House, Yenagoa , Governor Douye Diri announced a reward of One Million Naira for each of the 25 registered players while N500, 000 was the reward to each of the unregistered players.

According to the governor, each coach of two clubs will receive 1.3 million Naira while chairmen of the clubs will be rewarded with 1.5 Million Naira each as board members of the clubs will go home with one million Naira.

Olympic silver medalist, Blessing Oborududu got four Million Naira for making Nigeria proud in Japan.

The governor noted that as a former commissioner for Youth and Sports Development he was elated by the feat achieved by both sides and the wrestler, describing it as unprecedented.

He commended the players and wrestler for their commitment and discipline throughout the tournament, pointing out that the success was just the beginning of greatness in their career.

Senator Diri while advising players not to be carried away by the victory, said it was time for Bayelsa players to play in the various National teams in the country.

He encourage fans to support the local league and teams rather than paying attention to foreign leagues, stating that the only way they could get global recognition was continuous attention.

Earlier, commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr Daniel Igali thanked the Governor and the deputy governor for the support given to sports in the state, noting that the success was as a result of the cordial working relationship the ministry has enjoyed with the government.

Mr. Igali appealed to the government for the immediately revamp of the Samson Siasia Stadium before the commencement of the CAF Confederation Cup, adding that it would not be befitting for the team to prosecute their home matches outside Bayelsa.

In an interview, chairman of Bayelsa United, Mr Ebiki Timitimi appreciated the governor for the gesture, stressing that it would spur the players ahead the CAF confederation Cup.

The piooner captain of Bayelsa United said he was optimistic of going beyond the preliminary round of the African’s second tier club competition.

Clueless government....Waste of money and meanwhile teachers, health workers and goverment workers are owed salary.... No civilised country in the world where a state or federal government gives money to Olympic medal athletes or club that wins football matches... Not even on Afghanistan or Syria this happens.

You support your athletes by funding the sports ministry and also create an atmosphere where sports men and woman can thrive such as free healthcare for sports people, free education by the schools and universities they attend and represent, participation of private businesses via sponsoring athletes and competitions, etc.

For sports ministry they need to publicly start showing thier accounting books what they did what money's allocated to then by state, federal or international organizations.

Everything with Nigeria is lack of accountability that's why even NNPC still dey use pen and paper for business instead of computer...Why? Easier to fraud without trace.

Clueless governor... Sad part is the sports center in yenogoa is in shambles and need renovation and clean up but him no dey see road...
