Europa Conference League: Awoniyi Bags Brace, Assist vs KuPS As Union Berlin Edge Closer To Group Stage Qualification


Taiwo Awoniyi scored two goals and provided an assist as Union Berlin thrashed Finnish side KuPS 4-0, in the Europa Conference League first-leg play-off tie on Thursday, Completesports.com reports.

Awoniyi has now scored three goals in his last two games for Union Berlin.

He scored the only goal in Union Berlin’s 1-1 home draw against Leverkusen, in their first Bundesliga game of the season.

The Nigerian striker opened the scoring in the 7th minute and got his second goal on 31 minutes to make it 3-0.

He provided the assist for Union Berlin’s second goal scored by Max Kruse in the 29th minute.

The return leg comes up in Germany next Thursday and the winner over two legs will progress into the group stage.

just did a quick check on the ages of the players of the team Rohr refers to as Young to see if the man has committed any crime to call them young. I took a look at our “Most Likely” 23 man list for the forthcoming AFCON and here’s what I found.

Out of a team of 23, only 5 are above the age of 25, a further 4 are 25 and the remaining 14 are below 25…..that 61% of the team.

We could easily have taken numbers 1 – 18 on that list to Tokyo 2021 as our Olympics team If we had qualified. This team can easily pass for our Olympic squad. If a country parades what could pass for its olympic team at any senior competition, would it not be said that they are parading a young squad…?

Plus the ones over 25, the average age of the team is 24.52 years old.
Minus the 5 who are over 25, the average age of the team is 23.5 years old

Boy Nigeria is bless but the issue is can Rohr built a team from them

I keep saying it, Gernot Rohr is not tactically sound to utilize these current talented SE squad.

Some say we should give him time, but the Franco-German Coach has been with the SE since 2016 and no meaningful achievement to show for.

Take a look at the tactically sound Thomas Tuchel who inherited the talents Frank Lampard had in his disposal and made them Champions of Europe within a year.

We need a Coach with a winning mentality, not the legacy building Rohr.
