Peoples Gazette has accepted that its reporting on a story it published on the National Social Cohesion Dialogue organized by the Africa Polling Institute, which held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja on Thursday was laced with falsehood.

The Gazette in its report had claimed that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said that there is “Nothing special about Nigerians being violently killed, hungry and unemployed”.

Nigerians however frowned at the report of the blog, saying it did not reflect what the Vice President said. Many also said they were at the function and never heard Prof. Osinbajo say those words.

On realizing that it had taken it’s fake news campaign too far, the Gazette attempted some damage control, although it changed the heinous headline, it was as cynical as the earlier published headline. The blog wrote, “Nothing special about Buhari regime battling violent killings of Nigerians, unemployment: Osinbajo” in its latest headline.

To save face, Gazette tweeted, “Editor’s Note: This story has been updated to reflect the accurate context of Mr Osinbajo’s full statement, which was not previously made available to The Gazette.”

The Gazette is notorious for fake news and misleading reports and have been subject to sanction in the past by the Nigerian government earlier this year.

On 26 August 2021, former Minister of State for Petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu filed a lawsuit against The Gazette for a fabricated report designed to malign his personality. He is one of hundreds of Nigerians that have filed lawsuit against the notorious blog.

Ilsa Aida said, "This is a lie. Why would anyone believe he would say this at a National Social Cohesion Dialogue? He spoke on the unbreakable Nigerian spirit, shared interests, how our tribulations are similar to the history of various nations and our abiding feature of optimism," she said.

Another user, The Patriot, said people were commenting without reading the true content. "You're one of those that read headlines then jump straight to comment section. Did you read the story? Does the story reflect anything in this headline?

Similarly, Yahaya Wada knocked the Peoples Gazette for its reporting. "You should know he can’t say this. Sometimes news outlets are shitty when it comes to news headlines."

See your life people's Gazette. This is outright poor journalism.

Gazette spreading fake news

I think it was this sort of unethical journalism that led to Premium Times sacking the owner of People’s Gazette. The gazette guy is obviously a failed journalist who is in competition with Sahara Reporters in the department of proliferating fake news. If he continues this way, his brand won't stand the test of time.
