Nigeria has announced new relations with Russia in light of the recent splurge of insecurity and insurgency across the nation. The deal is reported as an agreement to train the country's military in a bid to address the Boko Haram menace and technology transfer.

The move further strengthens Russia's presence in the African continent. The Russian Federation has ramped up efforts in recent years to expand its role in Africa through investment, trade and military assistance. These efforts culminated in the first Russia-Africa summit, held in the Black Sea resort of Sochi in October 2019.

Despite the positive motives behind the new relationship, it is not without its question marks- The Nigerian Government was met with huge international backlash in the wake of last year's ENDSARS protests; there were claims from the American government that the White House had stopped the sale of $1 billion worth of military equipment to Nigeria due to concerns over human rights infringements.

Those claims have since been denied by members of the Government hierarchy.
