Word-of-mouth gave Mister Bones, California author Seth Greenland's fiercely humorous debut novel, some success three years ago. While his second opus appears, it is however unlikely the author will compete with the new novels of Pynchon, Johnson, Ford and other McEwans (to name only foreign authors). A model boss, which appears only two months after the United States, remains one of the rather good surprises of the American return to school.

Marcus Ripps is a mid-level Californian Valley executive caught up in a complicated life. Responsible for a toy factory, he struggles with the daily life of a couple at the end of the race, a stepmother in fragile health but with a strong character, unstable finances. When his job is brutally cut by a relocation to China, Marcus sees his life fall into a nightmare.

A big surprise awaits him, however: on his death, his forgotten brother bequeathed him a seemingly flourishing dry cleaning. But the brother in question was a dangerous thug, and Marcus soon discovers that the business is just a front for a high-profile prostitution ring. Against all odds, he turns overnight into a novice love-vendor but is determined to make his new business a model of its kind.

Extending the universe of Mister Bones, Greenland presents us in the Un patron model a radically different facet of Californian life. Here we discover the average citizens, those who toil more or less far from Hollywood glitter (which was at the heart of Mister Bones).

The portrait of Marcus Ripps and his family plunged into the heart of a situation that should overtake them, is often distressing, even if it sometimes generates certain questions, if not a slight discomfort.
The social realism of the portrait, however, is not at the end of the road: Greenland never touches the truth of everyday life, and never makes us forget that these are fictional characters, immersed in higher work. As you might see in a movie or an offbeat TV series.

This feeling, which allows Greenland to make his writings accessible to as many people as possible, is also the author's main weak point on the literary level. And for good reason: on the back cover, the publisher mentions with a certain pride that Greenland has worked a lot for Hollywood (the IMDb only mentions it, however, in the script of a few forgotten series and feature films).

And that the rights of Mister Bones and A model boss were bought, even before their publication, by two major Hollywood studios. A logical continuation for two books whose writing is close to a scenario, whose linearity is only broken by a few timely flashbacks. A peculiarity that certainly allows the author to be appreciated by a public not necessarily a great reader, literary.
